I mean, you really want to march around in a hot desert, wearing a full uniform, a heavy rifle and pack and one of those goofy desert hats with the neck flaps...and all with a bunch of Frenchmen??? Why would anyone want to do that?

Well essentially it offered the chance of a new life...

Learning French was necessary and after your 5-6 year service you would be granted a French passport a new name and the chance to be a french citizen in France or move ANYWHERE with a new legal identity.

It offered an escape for criminals, bankrupts or anyone escaping personal shame....

Hope that helps.

I wish I had an answer for you but the other 2 gentleman answered well.

I didn't know the legion still existed.

I will probably learn more about other fighting entities when I am in the Marines.

Most people do it because their criminals and want to escape their old lives...all their past information is removed and they're given a new name...it's prety s**ty though cuz there is no value for the lives of those guys
