I wish to consider the old and new testament separately here, though the books contained therein might be considered together.
I'm just curious as to when it first got committed to the written form, as before that it can only have been passed by word of mouth...... and we all know how reliable THAT is... don't we? For that matter I also know they used to brew beer in the middle east back then..... not that it has anything to do with the topic at hand, mind you....

The first 5 book were attibuted to Moses (about 1500/1300 bc) so they were word of mouth before that (bits of it supposedly for thousands of years). And we know what happens there don't we - that would be like us writing about King Arthur legends and it being taken as fact.

The oldest copies of the Bible are the Dead Sea Scrolls. To get the exact age you will have to research them online. As far as the oldest recorded religious beliefs, they go back to ancient Sumerian tablets found in the ancient cities of Ur and also some in Northern Iraq. They were monotheistic (one God) in nature. Moses is thought to have lived in or near the city of Ur also and he is credited with the first five books of the Bible. So we do know that witting was in use at the time of Moses and probably before. How long before would be a guess at this stage
