Poodles are actually a large breed and not very family oriented. I hate to keep promoting this one particular site but it is quite handy for helping select a dog breed.

Try the local Shelter - these dogs have been screened for "child-suitability", so you know what you are getting. Most of them are pedigree dogs, but without the papers, not many mongrels there. If you don't want a very active dog, don't get a Border Collie (there are loads in the Shelters, as the previous owners couldn't handle them). This way you can get a pedigree dog without the price tag and most likely already houstrained with some obedience thrown in. Check out breeds online so you know which kind of dog you definitley don't want, as at the shelter they all look like "please take me home". If you want to get a dog from a breeder, get an Otterhound. They make good familiy pets and the breed is endangered, as they aren't very well known / popular. They are a bit big though, so not necessarily a suitable dog for a flat.

Any dog makes a good family pet, although some of the tiny breeds can be treated as toys by small children,if you teach kids to be gentle though then they do make good pets. The mini or toy poodle would be a great family pet and there very intelligent aswell. There coat does need regular grooming and trimming but this isn't to much of a problem they also dont moult.Good luck.

Whatever dog you get is going to need at least 1 hours walking each day, if you don't like walking, get a cat!
Poodles are quite exuberant dogs so need to be kept amused with exercise of some kind, if you saw Crufts then may be you saw the poodle doing agility? Spaniels like to be walked a fair bit, even a Chihuahua needs to be exercised or it will get bored and become destructive, a Dachshund is a hunting dog, again it needs plenty of exercise, so you will have to commit at least 1 hour each day to walking a dog, not necessarily all at once, but spread between 2-3 walks each day.

The best is to get a dog from a dogs home. The carers there will know the character of each dog and you won't have the trouble with raising a puppy. They are cute, but a lot of work. You will also not have to pay a few hundret quid for a dog, but instead give a poor good dog a loving home.

Don't breed or buy, whilst homeless die!

I have a Corgi and a mixed breed ("American dog of unknown ethnic origins") who I affectionately call the "freeloaders." The Corgi is a smallish dog. Corgis have the heart and body type of a big dog, but very short legs. They're the dogs the Queen of England has. I have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Queen has Pembrokes. Cardigans are a bit stouter and have a tail. My mixed breed is very sweet, but has some health issues and I would happily get a mixed breed again, but only if I had a clue what was in the mixture.

I suggest an Alsatian. Its very friendly. My neighbour has one and it's very friendly with me. ^_^

I also suggest a Golden Retriever. My piano teacher has one and it's a beauty. Not aggresive at all. ^_^ A Chiwawa might be a good house pet too. Some poodles are big. Better choose wisely.

Actually it depends on the dog's characteristics. Not every breed has the same attitude.

BORDER TERRIER
They are very gentle, great with kids, and if the kids like playing with the dog in the backyard, all of its exercise needs will be covered. They dont shed much and arent as yappy as a poodle or chihahua. Chihahuas are NOT GOOD WITH KIDS. They will bite kids and will only hang around the leaders (you) Standard poodles are good with kids, but they are quite large (more than 15 times the size of a chihahua). You will want to have a dog that you can completely rely on while the kids are alone with it. Border terriers are nice and are great for beginning dog owners. As your kids grow, and your dog gets older, you will not ant to have a super hyper dog like a chihahua or poodle. Border terriers have a good longevity and do not shed much. Look at them at:llok below. If you want to be paired well, go to a shelter and they will find a good dog for you.

Good Luck,
NO POODLES OR CHIHAHUAS!

no breed is better than any breed nor pure vs mixed; it is all in the owner, trainer; it takes time, patience, training, understanding, effort = great adult dog ; some dog traits are helpful i.e. a dog like a border collier that loves to herd etc; once you zero in on the traits of a breed that may be a match; talk to people who have that breed but every dog is different even if breed specific; it is all in your loving, patience, training hands as to how the pup learns, grows and develops into a great adult dog. Lousy owners have misbehaved dogs.

Well a small dog is not a good pet for small kids cause the kids will hurt the dog and small dogs are easier for them pick up and carry around. It is better to have a bigger dog for little kids and train it to be extra nice to the kids.
if you have older kids the best and more lovable small dog is a Jack Russell Terrier. They are the most loyal lovable dogs. I have a Irish Jack Russel they are the ones that are smaller and have short legs.
