I'm originally from south Louisiana. Traditionally we don't do sit downs. We are party people and like to mingle and talk to everyone, so food at our weddings is beautifully displayed on banquet tables and is self serve. There are usually waiters walking around with finger food. Tables are provided for those who wish to sit and eat.
You can buck tradition and do as you please if it's your wedding. Be sure to taste food from caterer before ordering. Better yet go to one of their catered functions be fore hiring. Good luck.

Not "everyone" insists on dinner. Who is insisting that? I've been to weddings that served just finger food or served lunch, brunch, etc.
But you're right, regular wedding caterers' offerings are boring.
I think the "nasty wedding cake" thing is an old myth. Most bakeries are more careful about the ingredients they use now, and fewer freeze the cakes. They can charge more for a cake that tastes better, so it's to their advantage.

LOL....its all about the ambviance...
Once you get all decked out in that fancy dress and tiara, it seems silly to eat at a bar or local grille where the public is still hanging out after 9. Every bride has to decide between fancy chandeliers and good food (except maybe for Paris Hilton and Brittney). Other than that, you pay for service, food and fanfare. We all try to strike a balance. For lots of brides the wow of the hall wins over the woe of the food. As for the cake, I love the wedding cake tradition. I find fondant personally yicky...but love traditional white cake with way too sweet frosting----once every 3 years when I get invited to a wedding lol.
There are compromises....if you dont need to see your name in lights in front of the local country club and on the high society pages there are plenty of options---including restaurants, groves and banquet facilities. There's also something to be said for shopping around and tasting the food first---but lots of brides are held hostage by the families and moms who MUST have a reception at such-n-such a place.....the pictures are lovely, they last a lifetime....the indigestion, not more than an hour or two....

If you're having an afternoon wedding, then traditionally you're not obligated to serve a sitdown dinner. I believe that you're supposed to serve a sitdown dinner if your wedding is after 5 p.m. You're also not obligated to have the wedding catered. Our wedding was at 2:00 p.m. and my mother-in-law and her friends made all the sandwiches, bought potato salad and cole slaw at the deli, and there were chips, dip, and peanuts. We also had a friend who baked our wedding cake and it was delicious. All the food at our wedding was good. If you can afford to take your guests to a restaurant that you like, then by all means do that. Most people can't afford to do that, so it's less costly to have it catered or have family & friends pitch in to make the food.

More and more married couples are having their reception dinner at resturants and having different desserts than cake. It's just more formal having a sit down meal and having a wedding cake. But its all up to the bride and groom what they like. They should pick what they will be wanting to have, not every guest will like what is being served, thats why you have a different selection and than surely they will like something thats in front of them.

I've been to weddings with great food, and I've been to weddings with so-so food. Nothing too terrible. The last wedding my fiance and I went to, they had a buffet. The downside...the sauces for the chicken was right next to the salad dressing, and nothing was labeled! A good handful of us put what we thought looked like French dressing, but it was hot sauce on our salads. haha.
Since we're on a tight budget with our wedding, we're having friends and family do the food. We're doing simple sandwiches, a few different salads, and vegetables along with meatballs and something else...forget...
As for the cake, we wanted a variety in flavors, but could not afford $1.75 a slice.
Instead we opted to go for a cupcake tower. With that we're having 6 different flavors of cupcakes, and it turned out to be $8 per dozen and much bigger serving sizes.

Been to scores of weddings, never to one with bad food! Quite the opposite, I guess we have been lucky.
Don't understand the wedding cake thing; didn't have the showy one for our wedding, had traditional Ukrainian wedding breads on display, gave out traditional wedding fruitcake, wrapped, for people to put under their pillows to "dream on".

Cause they are not paying for it. It's your wedding. Do what you wanna do. It's supposed to be a pretty happy day. If things aren't the way you want them, you will not be happy and may even regret it later on. Life is to short to go by the norm.

They watch human beings get kicked out, or maybe kick them out themselves for no longer being 'chic' sufficient or only being a dork. whilst your job is making optimistic human beings fit in, your going to finally end up being a shallow, depressed individual. you won't be able to be shallow and depressed once you're courting =p. you ought to continuously attempt to alter your bouncer right into a individual who's a good dater, yet that sounds extra like a movie plot. in case you like a bouncer, good success with that.
