As far as brand is concerned my personal choice for black and white film is Ilford. I especially like their Panf film. However, you can't really say that this is the best brand or best film, simply a personal choice. Each film has different qualities that each photographer will exploit for their own personal style. I personally like a wide range of tonality and minimal grain which is why I choose to shoot with PanF. Although some photographers love grain and shoot with nothing but Kodak T-max 3200iso and enlarge their prints to emphasize that quality, and for them perhaps that is the best film in the world, but really there is no standard for film which we can judge all films in terms of good or bad.
