a baddie catches 4 goodies (susan, jim, pete and jill). he burries them vertically with only their heads above ground .susan on 1 side of a tall wall (facing it) ,the other 3 also facing the wall on the other side .1 behind the other (jim nearest the wall , pete can see jim and jill can see pete and jim) they can't see over the wall and no one can turn their head.the baddie has 4 hats (2 black and 2 white ) he puts a black hat on susan, a white hat on jim , a black hat on pete and a white hat on jill . he then says that whoever can say what colour hat they are wearing they will be let free but only 1 person is allowed only 1 guess. who guesses the correct answer?

This is only a guess. Susan as she can see man with 4hats then three hats so can figure out which she has ???

Any one of them if all they have to say is "what colour hat they are wearing"
I don't know: Susan can't see any of them, so she has no way of knowing.
Jim can't see anyone, so he has no way of knowing.
Pete can only see Jim's white hat, so his could be either black or white,
Jill can see Pete's black hat and Jim's white hat, but doesn't know what colour Susan's is, so her's could be either colour.
The only way would be if the wall was made of a reflective material, or if Jill saw the hat that the baddie put on Susan.

Susan probably... If its a glass wall, Susan will see that Jill, Pete and Jim on the other side of the wall have 2 white hats and one black hat collectively, making the fourth hat (her hat) black. just guessing .. whats the answer?

It Has to be Jill
As the baddie come to the other side of the wall with just 3 hats after putting the black one on Susan.
so he sees three hats 2 white and 1 black and he can see one black and one white on Pete and Jims head..
so he can guess his one is white

You have said that only jim,pete and jill are on a side of the wall. But susan can see all the other three and reply the baddle.

i take it they know that there are two black and two white hats. if so.
pete answers that he is wearing a black hat.
he can tell from jills silence that he is not wearing the same white colour hat as pete, otherwise jill would conclude that she is wearing a black hat.
but obviously she cant make this decision so he realises that he has a different coloured hat to jim, and jim is wearing a white hat so he must have on a black hat.

Only Pete can guess he has a black hat.
If Jill sees Pete and Jim have the same colour hats, she would know her hat is the other colour.
Pete does not hear Jill saying the colour of her hat so he knows his hat and Jim's are of different colours. Since Jim's hat is white, Pete's hat must be black.

He puts a black hat on Susan FIRST, so when she sees him walk awayfrom her to go to the other side of the wall he is still carrying 1 other black hat and 2 white hats, so Susan guesses black first correctly.
