Back up all personal data first.

Insert the Linux CD/DVD and follow the prompts.

Choose to clean install (Linux only) or dual boot (Windows & Linux). Linux can partition your hard drive without trashing Windows.

I used my windows cd to format, then used my live cd to install. I'm running a Ubuntu/XP system, so its probably more complicated for other more complex versions.
