Why do dentists charge so much?

They cost more than doctors. I can't figure out why it costs $450.00 for a root canal. I have checked with various dentists and that seems to be the going rate. And on top of that he works on someone elses teeth at the same time going back and forth.

That $450.00 figure is after insurance.

First, $450 for a root canal is not expensive. Most cost $500-$1000. Second, saving a tooth is not cheap. The tools and equipment that the dentist uses for a root canal is VERY expensive!!! You're also paying for the dentist's time, his assistant, a clean office, the front desk people who answer the phones (who made the appointment for you) and also deal with insurance. Yes, the dentist is also working on someone else's teeth but when you go to get your teeth cleaned, the dentist must do an exam! If money is that much of a factor for you and you would rather not save the tooth and have a whole there, get it taken out! Trust me, it's cheaper to do the root canal then to have the tooth pulled and try to fill in that space later.

I know they have to recuperate their own costs from the expensive equipment, and also their overheads, but it goes beyond that many times and into the realm of greed unfortunately! Some of the costs are simply outrageous and some people have been financially devastated by attempting to pay for something that should not be out of someone's league and so often is. I do not trust most of them unfortunately. I've been had by a few also and one may tell you one thing and another tell you something else. One dentsit told me I needed a root canal and i got another opinion and there was no such thing needed!!!!!!! This is the kind of stuff you may find. A little like going to a mechanic and finding out not only are you being overcharged, but there are things that he foudn wrong, that were NOT wrong at all.

In other words, let the buyer beware! shop around and be careful. Ask around also.

call the dentist place and let them know that you had to go through an emergency service. Ask to speak to the manager, and tell them everything. If they refuse, tell them you will be taking your business elsewhere and that you will let family and friends to know to do the same. I am not sure you can make them pay for the fee, but the threat of losing buisness may makes them change their minds if they make an unfair choice. Good luck

That is cheaper than here for one. About 850 to 1000 for one here! I refuse to pay that much for one freakin tooth! Unless he can guarentee me that it will last me for life should I grow old and die. I'v asked that and he won't answer! Of course not! Because he knows it won't. But for the people who do pay, that's how her keep living in their fancy houses and drive the cars they do!

I'm assuming you don't have dental coverage, b/c if you did, you wouldn't be paying that much. Take a look at this site and you can save up to 80% of that

Actually they are Micro surgeons. As surgery is too expensive, so the Dental Surgeons are also expensive.
