There is no guarentee that any breed of dog will not dig or get into mischief. Some are more prove to digging, for instance the dachshund, and some more to mischief like a beagle. Any dog ignored and left to itself for long periods will be trouble. All puppies will go through their teens years starting around six months and going until 3 years old for the bigger breeds. The bigger the breed (great dane, st. bernard, and some labs), the longer the "teen years." Those are the years that are the most important for training, but also the dogs most rebellious times. So picking a dog really depends on your lifestyle.
If you live in an apartment with no yard, or live in the city. You will want a smaller dog, as they will need less exercise. Some breeds are a chihuahua, pug, and toy poodle. However smaller dogs tend to be more snappy, so you will have to socialize them well and make suse that you train them well.
If you plan on taking you dog for walks at least daily (preferably more), Or if you live in an area with plenty of room to exercise your dog, perhaps a bassest hound, collie, or great dane. The larger the dog though, the more dominant you will have to be and firm in your control over them so that they don't run your life instead of the other way around.
Below I've included a quiz that can help you determine the best dog for you. It is not the be all and end all of dogs, but it can be helpful.
Good luck on finding your new family member.

well, you gave to little info, where do you stay, how big is your yard if you have,do you like a small breed or large breed, are you looking for a pet dog or a guard dog....?
with regards to the digging scenario, not much you can do about that, all dogs dig from time to time, especially if they are under a year old. Dogs are like children, want to explore, and digging is one of those things. What you can do is to have a sand-pit in at your home for the dog to play in. I have Staffordshire Terriers, they are know for digging, but I give them alot of attention and play-time and exercise, cause a terrier left alone will become a terrorist. Like with Staffies you need to give them a lot of attention. It is also important to train your dog as a puppy and another important thing is the dogs bloodline, in a good bloodline you will eliminate things such as temper, behavior ext. Cheers

Staffordshire bull terriers are very nice dogs but there has been a big media thing about one trying to take a cookie out of a kids mouth and it ripped his lip off. Although that, they are nice dogs, love their owners and are great with kids. You have to be prepared to do alot of obedience with it. Staffies are fairly active, and they need a good jog and an half an hour romp in the yard a day or they will get bored. Any dog that gets bored will dig if it is in the backyard. Terriers are notorios for this, and their name "terra" means german for earth. If you want to find a good dog for you, go to the site below. it is a dog breed selector. Just fill in all of your personal circumstances...etc. and it will pick a good dog breed for you. If you go to a shelter, such as the rspca, theyw will pair you up with a dog that wil be great for you, because they want dogs to go to good homes. It will be much cheaper t adopt than to buy from a breeder, and they will be much more grateful to you.
Good Luck,

most dogs if not all are faithfully and playfull especially when puppies, but ALL dogs have to be trained how to behave which takes alot of time and determination, whatever dog you chose PLEASE take time to research the breed as all dogs are hard work but all have different needs. good luck with whatever dog you decide to have, i am sure you will make a lovely owner.

Try looking into dogs at your local shelter. Some adoption fees are very reasonable and they include obedience classes

If you like smaller dogs a Pomeranian is the best one out there for you. Good companion, very protective of their caretaker and laid back.
