Good question.

It does go directly against the teachings of Jesus, but not the sermons of priests, clergy and willing supporters.

Right now, today, last week and next week thousands of bishops, priests, preachers will advocate the death of other human beings in the name of God, and their followers will rejoice.

Instead, you will see answers that say things like "no one is perfect"..."a few bad apples...", "...there are bad people in every religion.." etc. None address your question directly, no explain how people who claim to follow the teachings of Jesus could be so confident in their hate towards other people.

Well, this is a tricky question. I personally have a little trouble reconciling the "thou shall not kill" commandment with the other parts of the Bible which punish certain crimes with death. It kinda doesn't make sense, right? Then again perhaps those parts are supposed to be discarded and trumped by the Ten Commandments. Who knows? I have read somewhere that it is never stated that the laws of the Old Testament (where most violence occurs) are to be forgotten, and that Jesus himself actually said that no law shall ever fail. I don't personally know which way it works, but if you believe that the OT stuff was okay (i.e. death for working on the sabbath) then you could be Christian and still support killing (i.e. death penalty).

Ok, I am going to try and explain some things. The Bible was written down by HUMAN BEINGS. therefore, is not 100% accurate. also, if u take away all the **** that we humans have let infiltrate our religion u will see that the core teachings of Christianity are beautiful. God said love all people, everyone is equal, love thy neighbour, turn the other cheek etc. all wonderful teachings, all that **** about not accepting homosexuals, making sacrifices, killing is okay because all ur sins will be forgiven in the end, well that completely contradicts God's teachings. this crap was made up by humans in the middle ages and people still interpret it way to literally. Baically what i'm saying is sieve out all the made up stuff and what ur left with is a beautiful, accepting faith!

you can not be a christian and support killing. although you will get a lot of argument for it.
christ forgave while hanging on the cross. how can his followers do any less?
people who quote the old testament to justify killing aren't really following christ.
christian - christ like. living your life as christ did, or at least trying your best to.

i'm sure to get a lot of thumbs down for this.

edit
i was once a christian. i've never understood the way people use certain verses of the bible to make themselves believe what they're doing is right.
happy eclectic pagan.

they can always show some other page in the bible to argue their point. bible of course has lots of pages and lotsa contradictory statements. esp between the old and new testaments. so a true christian can join an army and kill and at the same time spout some nonsense to say he is following jesus' teachings. just like the muslim fanatics with their teachings.

I dont know but I know that Only the major religions get down with this. Its like their identity, money, or pride, bla bla or maybe oil , revenge. Whatever the case there must be a god because, why didnt anyone especially the pharoahh i guess said he was god, that fool died. Bible does have love in it. People are wierd. But religion will protect you.

Because you can find support in the bible for anything you want to do.
Just quote a verse that applies to whatever you want, and claim it's gods word.
Want to kill people? Read the old testament. Lots of killing and death penalties going on there. So if you want to support your case, look in the bible.

Fortunately, god doesn't object at all to people who speak in his name.

If you are talking about abortion or murder then you are exactly right. I am a Christian and do not believe in criminal acts of that kind. I do think that the death penalty is warranted in some cases though. A serial killer or a pervert who rapes and kills women and young children should get the death penalty.

I would have to ask: Killing who?

If you are referencing innocent bloodshed, then I agree with you wholeheartedly.

If you are talking about a state-sanctioned death penalty, then we will disagree. The NT openly supports the right of the government to "bear the sword" in order to keep the peace. Paul, on trial for his life, states openly that if he had actually broken a law with a capital punishment attached, that he "would not refuse to die".

Please explain the context of your question.

It's simple "thou shalt not kill" in other words no one has the right to take a life, be it even the life of someone convicted of murder. That makes the individual who pulls the switch on a convicted murderer no less a sinner.
