There's alot of resturants that are very classy yet affordable, Red Robbin, Friday's, etc. He can take her there and then they could always go have a picnic in a park, just the two of them. Or they can go sight seeing and he could present her with a affordable necklace, bracelet, ring. Anything to mark the 30th anniversary.
By the way the 30th anniversary gift is Pearls.

30th anniversary... I'm guessing that the children are adults or close to it? Why not throw an anniversary party for them... invite as many people that attended the original wedding as possible as well as their current friends and family.. and surprise them with a reenactment of their vows! I did this for my parent's 50'th... I had great help from a friend who blew up their old wedding pics on his computer and we posted them around the house... we got a wedding style cake (two layers, nothing superexpensive), most of the relatives contributed appetizers, and we had lots of homemade wine and punch. We got Mom a bouquet and veil, and suspenders and a boutonierre for Dad, and a friend (non minister but he fooled a lot) led the renewal of the vows, with a few humourous asides tossed in. It was a great party... we did it in the afternoon as at their age most of their friends were old and needed transport by younger relatives... but everyone had a wonderful time and my parents were thrilled! Make a memento album for them as well... a guestbook that doubles as a photo album... and ask the guests to bring a picture of themselves with the anniversary couple, the older the better, in lieu of gifts :)

It's inexpensive, and memorable.. :)

If you mean your dad is asking you for ideas, then I have one. Get your dad to buy some cheapy overnite items at the drug store (trial size soaps, toothpaste, etc.). If he is splurging then include a gift card to her fav store. Be sure that one of the items is a rose. Then take all the gifts and make it a progressive gift. That is---either you hide them so she finds them throughout the day....and at the end of the day he takes her to a dinner and a hotel (hence all the overnite stuff) or he makes the date a progressive find (he spends the day with her going from place to place where they find these things). The cost of dinner and hotel is completely up to him....she will be floored just by the effort and planning. The range of prices is endless from a picnic and off-season mid-week hotel rates to the outrageous. As for your gift, you could rent a car and get a friend to drive them around for the evening, rent a limo (lots of good deals again for off peak and mid-week), BE the dinner host (make the meal, candles and all at your place and serve them), and then theres the old standbyes get them a bottle of champagne, toasting glasses, a wedding candle, a night out on the town. I dont celebrate my parents anniversary, we keep it special for the two of them..but my dad has asked me to be in cahoots for planning surprises for my mom.....keep it simple. Its their day.

Get him to renew his wedding vows or have him engrave something on her wedding ring or engagement ring with out her knowing. Than purpose all over again, try doing the same thing and going to the same place where they first got engaged or went on their first date.
You could get them a photo album and find wedding pictures that they dont have out and place them in this album so they can look at when ever they want, or having a picture frame and place a wedding picture inside and have it engraved with a sweet saying.

I would highly recommend your dad takes your mom to a nearby bed and breakfast - they are fun and romantic, my husband and I go to one every year together to celebrate our anniversary. Always a great time!!
