Both have been used in equal measure.

Depends on the context. Religion is an "excuse" in cases where people want to kill anyway, and just use religion to get away with it; however, this isn't really as common as you'd think, because while people may want a lot of things (money, power, etc.), killing lots of people usually isn't one of those things. Even for the worst of souls, it's usually a means to an end, not an end in itself. Religion is a "reason" in cases where, rather than merely justifying atrocities, it actually encourages and promotes them--consider the Inquisition and Witch Trials and Aztec human sacrifice, for example. None of those are "excusing" people for doing what they wanted to do anyway, at least for the most part; rather, they're providing the basic motivation, or reason, for killing in the first place.

So, religion is a "reason to kill" vastly more often than it's an "excuse to kill", for the simple reason that most people don't go out of their way to kill random people without a reason to do so; excuses are more after-the-fact. On the other hand, why should the two be mutually exclusive? Religion, in some cases, can both give a reason and an excuse for killing: the reason might be, for example, "they're infidels", and the excuse might be "you'll be cleansed of all sin if you die for God".

Well religion does reason out a lot of things. I mean did you had that time in your life when you started to find meaning of life and ****, maybe did drugs to find god etc. well tell you what religion kills but as a "Muslim American" (word not out in dictionary) how do think I deal with the meaning of holy war vs civil war? a regular muslim would pray 5 times a day and really leave everything to beaver. I dont know. But I can you this muslims are really answering your question on TV. I just like the pray 5 and leave it to beaver. Well not everyone is alike, not every religion is the same. Find your own religion. America does give you that option to have the freedom of religion that could be a realigion to most people as to be able to well practice their way. Atheism in America is perfect because technically I think America could be a religion. Well I am a muslim so I do belive in moving things , you know like things that move, would not consider idol worshiping a religion at any cost. Because it wouldnt move anything. Yet my religion strickly prohibits that. OH well love is in the bible. That is one realigion that cant kill. I mean killing people while playing a multiplayer onlline game vs living that same scene in real life can sometimes happen I guess. Try some drugs and watch matrix :-) lol you didnt hear it from me.

Any two wrongs do not make a right. No religion preaches
Hate or voilence or gives any human the right to kill another human except in self defense or to protect the honour
of your loved ones , your country or your religion. The Holy Quran says that if a person kills another ,unless it be for
Murder or to create mischief in the land it is as though he has
killed the whole of mankind, and if a person saves the life of
another it is as though he saved the whole of mankind.
It is people possessed by the devil who are hungry for
revenger, politics, power, and materialistic Gains that Kill his
fellow human and the best excuse is to take the name of
religion to get approval from similar Fanatics.Violence is not
the monopoly of any religion , it is not.

It depends on the religion in question.

Some religions seem to require killing. In that case, "reason to kill" is correct.

There are religions that are supposed to be almost pacifistic in nature. In these faiths, however, we do find some reeeeeallly strange individuals, who go through intense mental gymnastics with the holy writ of their faith, to excuse their violent behaviour. In THIS case, the accurate term is "excuse to kill".

Most religions aren't about killing, but about adjusting oneself to life, so I'd have to say "an excuse to kill" would normally be the case.

Most religions are essentially pacifist, and this applies to Buddhist, Muslim and Christian. Wars are caused by extremists. I'm rather sick of this accusation that believers are the sole reason for all evil in the past of the human race.

What's the difference? Anyhow you can be sure that if there was no religion people would kill each other anyhow. This is the point that silly @ss Richard Dawkins doesn't get

Reason to kill, if you refer to the original formation of christianity.

People who believe in Jesus, his message and apostles today still mistakenly believe he created christianity. Nothing could be further from the truth. The religion of Jesus was Nazarene, the ancestor of the gnostic traditions.

The books of Jesus were the gnostic gospels, not the false teachings of the Jewish High Priests and satanic lords of Paul of tarsus and St. Luke.

The whole purpose of christianity since its formation has been to curse those against it and those that follow it, to murder, steal and suppress the soul of the world and keep Jesus in a state of hell.

Even today, people who should at least read some history who profess to love Jesus and the apostles, refuse to open their eyes and see the truth, that christianity has never stopped killing and has nothing to do with love, nor saving the world.

If only God would allow goodness to shine down and open the eyes of all those who claim to love Jesus.
