The majority of the hotels in Bangkok are reasonable. I usually stay at the J.W. Marriott on Sukhumvit Rd. and it is centrally located to shopping as well as the nightlife areas. It has a pool, a gym and a spa. It's a great hotel.

Once you get there, either get a limo from the airport or a taxi. Make sure that you take a metered taxi and ensure that they turn it on. You can discuss the fare prior to getting in and they will tell you an amount that will be close to the meter rate. As I said earlier, make sure that they turn it on. It's against the law for them not to use the meter. If you take an airport limo (sedan), it's a set fee, usually 500-1000 baht. All forms of transportation are pretty safe. Make sure that you save 500 baht for your airport departure tax.

As for the do's and don'ts, it's the same as any other big city. The biggest no-no is to say anything negative about the Royal Family, especially the King. It's a safe city and a very beautiful city. You'll have a wonderful time there.

As for clothing, on Sukhumvit Rd., there are street vendors everywhere and all prices are negotiable. Be aware that there are some deaf vendors there, so be patient with them. You can haggle prices with them as well.

Here are a few sites for you to check out. You'll love the city!

There are lots of questions here but I'll try to get through them as quickly as possible:

1) Taxi. Metered cabs are at the cab rank on the ground floor of the airport. Ignore the (many) touts that will pester you on the way to the ground floor.

2) Virtually all descent hotels have swimming pools. However, is impossible to recommend just one hotel because I don't know your price range or where you want to stay - if money is no object The Oriental (which has a swimming pool that looks out onto the river (as does the Shangri-la)). For a hotel, you could try http://www.wired-destinations.com/ The Quick Hotel Finder on the left of its main page produces a list of Bangkok hotels and prices once you enter Thailand as the country name.

3) The most happening area from a night-life perspective for European and American visitors is probably Nana followed by Patpong. For Asian visitors - the Ratchada area is popular - the entertainment there is too expensive for many westerner tourists except those that are determined to have a good time rather than see how little money they can survive on whilst in vacation in Bangkok. Khao San Rd is a sort of happening area for tourists without much money that you might want to see once in your life.

4) Dos and Don't: See http://www.thailandtravelservices.com/Thailand_Vacation.html

5) Football shirts: Pratu Nam market. The leading manufacturer of football shirts in Thailand is FBT. They have a factory shop outside Bangkok, which costs about Baht250 in a taxi each way to go there.

check out asiarooms.com for cheap rooms. My personal choice is Reno Hotel in BKK.

From the airport, all taxis are metered - this is monitored by airport staff. Out of airport, always ask if the driver is going by meter before going into a taxi. Just ask 'Meter?' they'll understand. No meter? Within bangkok do not pay more then 100Baht.

Best shopping places are MBK - Mah Boon Khrong Shopping Centre. [BTS Station National Stadium]
If you are there during a weekend, a MUST go is the Chatuchak Weekend market! Best deals! [BTS Station Mo Chit]
