I try to listen to them but I can't seem to focus. I think people may think I am ignoring them or I am interupting them.

There are times when I find myself doing the same thing. It usually happens to me when the topic of conversation is something I am uninterested in, or when I am trying to talk to a person who has a lower IQ than my own (not because that person is dump, just because our thought patterns are on different levels).

What helps is to try and maintain eye contact with the person. Don't start talking to them until they have paused for about 2 seconds, then it won't seem as though you are interupting them. While they are talking listen for a keyword and then ask them a question on that keyword.

For example, my boyfriend loves Warhammer and he is always telling me about the history of the races in the game (I drift off because I'm not interested in it). I know that he doesn't actually play the game himself, so I'll ask him when he is going to buy himself figurines to start playing. Or I'll ask him if he has found anybody that he can play with yet. Or something along those lines, thus slightly changing the topic, but not seeming like I wasn't listening.

Maybe you're trying too hard to listen or maybe, and this is more likely, you're too busy thinking about what you're going to say next and you can't focus on what the other person saying. Basically you need to relax. Don't worry about what you're going to say or what the person may be thinking about you and just relax and listen to the person as though he/she were talking to someone else and you were just overhearing the conversation. If you just stay quiet, you'll find you're listening more.

Take vitamins and try to focus. Search on the Internet for Active Listening techniques.

If it's getting really serious, see your doctor to see if you have a problem.

This happens to me when I really am pressured with many a serious issues. Please try relaxing your mind some what (if at all possible), before you really show to anyone that you are listening to what they are saying;
In the past this bothered me so much; that I actually fought it by just been truthful to anyone whom I was speaking with; by asking them to repeat what they just said because; I really was not listening as well as I wanted to.

Next time while conversing, do it with a full mouth. Then you will be forced to listen.

Well you are not interested in what they are saying so you just turn off.

Very hard to practice active listening.

Because you don't like yourself,
you can't notice to them,
if it is really the cause you will find that you do not pay attention to any other things,
