The thoughless utterance of two and a half words - andhe ka beta andha - by Draupdi to Duryodhana in the newly built mansion of Pandavas where Duryodhana fell into water, that sowed the seed of Mahabharata. Duryodhana wanted to take revenge for the words of Draupadi and was waiting for an opportunity. Big fires erupt from a spark only.

It is Draupadi being the wife of Five Pandavas who stood on Dharma side with the support of Krishna and Sakuni is the biggest contributor who encouraged misdeeds of Duryodhana for the illtreatment he was given to all his parents.

Any conflict of our human race is a conflict of ego.
A highly egoistic man , encroaches into others rights.Super ego clouds a persons thinking and prods him to do wrong things.
It is Dharma(ego which prods our conscience) , that tells us to fight for our right .
The Lord Krishna's sermons at the time of the war , summarises the needs of a war . It is the war of Dharma over Adharma , Crime and Punishment , Truthfulness over Falsehood . All these concepts are creation and maintenance of our ego only !
So , whenever the balance of right and wrong in a society or the affected world is disturbed , it is quite natural that the balance is restored through a holy war , as evidenced in the history of this world.
The war of Mahabharata was also a balancing act , where all the deeds of good and bad people acted as a catalyst for restoration of the sanity in the Bharat.
So it is the war and victory of good ego over bad ego.

The people mainly responsible are first: the unlawful desire of Dhritharasthra to remain the king and pass it on to his son is the fire lighted by him.
The Draupadis unmindful revenge to settle the humiliation suffered by her in the Royal Court supported it as AIR.
Both the FIRE & AIR contributed for total destruction

Mahabharta in real had to take place to reduce the weight and numbers of evils on the Earth. Through the Kauravas and Pandavas.. a huge number of deaths took place in that battle.
Also the Sacred Holy speech of Bhagwad Geeta was delivered to Arjuna (alike us who was confused between right and wrong) so, that we the people in Kalyug know what to do and what not.
