OS re-install is not necessary
Wwindows is causing it to restart... this is because it is set to reboot on system error.

The link below tells you how to change this setting... Once you have done this, instead of restarting, you will get a BSOD (blue screen of death), which should give a little more information related to the problem - a 10 character code in a message (say) like this:
STOP 0x0000007F (UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP).
Now hold the power button in, to switch off. Then restart...
Google (or yahoo) the 10 character code.
You should (eventually) find more information about the problem and usually at least one workable solution.

Good Luck!

I had that problem with Win98... that or sometimes it wouldn't shut down at all but would hang during the shutdown... and ended up having to reinstall to fix it.

Other than that, are you sure that the choice on shutting down your computer is set to shutdown and not restart? If you use the 'start -> shutdown' route it tells you what it will do... if you use any other route it may not tell you but will default to what it did last time. So if last time it restarted... that's what it will do.

Otherwise, check for viruses. Or, did it start when you installed something neww? Try uninstalling it and see if it starts behaving again.

Mr. Amit Dubey, in Windows XP/2000 please go to [Control Panel] > [Power Options] to check if you've Advanced Power Management (APM) setting enabled. Notes that if this setting only available to old computer without Advanced Power Control Interface (APCI) function featured in your PC's power supply box.

If you only face this issue in a very recent time, please thought back what've you done in your daytime work before the issue appearing.

REGARDS,
Jack

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
