Don't shower in really hot water. Use cool water, and use conditioner regularly. I use a deep conditioner and concentrate it on the ends. You could also try a leave in conditioner or serum like Biosilk. Recently I've been using a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and leave-in hair treatment from Sunsilk. I've been pretty happy with the results. My hair is past my hips, and I haven't had a problem with split ends. I've also had good experiences with Herbal Essences and Dove when my hair was shorter (down to my shoulder blades).

People I know have also tried products from brands like Queen Helene that are meant to fuse split ends together. I think they work as a temporary fix, and I don't see the harm in using them occasionally as a way to ward off split ends.

Don't comb your hair really hard. I know it's tempting to tug on it and attack it when it's tangled, but it's not a good idea. That will damage the cuticle of the hair, leaving it vulnerable to split ends and and further damage. Don't brush wet hair either. Hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, and is easier to break.

When swimming try to either use a swim cap (those never really worked for me), and be sure to wash your hair immediately afterward and condition well because chlorine is really bad for your hair.

Avoid excessive styling with curling irons, flat irons, etc. If you must style your hair, try using a serum first that protects your hair from the heat. I know Vidal Sassoon makes one.

Getting your hair trimmed regularly is also a good idea. This not only livens up your hairstyle, it saves the rest of your hair from split ends. Split ends, if untended, can actually travel up the hair shaft. So, you might have a tiny split end at first, but if you don't cut it off, you'll end up with a really big one. Those fusing creams or whatever are temporary fixes and won't actually "mend" your hair or anything.

Finally, protect your hair from the elements. This includes, snow, sun, etc. They will cause damage and increase the likelihood of split ends. Wear a hat when you're outside.

All in all, just be gentle with your hair.

I hope my answer helped!

nowadays, shampoos and conditioners have too much of harmful chemicals. So to avoid split ends, herbal shampoos, baby shampoos(these are mild), or nature remedies like curd, aritha, heena, kapoor, amla should be applied(as a mixture or individually- thats ur choice). The split ends will surely vanish and ur hair will be long and shiny too.
