There are two major things that effect the amount of pain you have when you get a tattoo. The first is where on your body you get the tattoo. generally places with bone close to skin hurt the most, and places with muscle and fat are a little less painful. The second is your threshold for pain. this is different for everyone which makes it hard to say what will hurt from one person to the next. i have heard from several tattoo artist on several different occassions that women have a higher tolerance for pain than men, so thats something to be happy about.

pain after the fact is also something people dont know a lot about. When you get a tattoo the needles are basically ripping at your skin and you are left with a punch of tiny little scabs that itch like crazy- dont scratch them because you can pul the ink out. You can also expect a fair amount of soarness and swelling

p.s. other than like over the counter ibuprofen, dont do any drugs to 'take the edge off' because you dont know how that will effect your senses and nerves. a friend of mine smoked some pot before getting a tattoo and said it hurt a hundred times more that it would have if she hadent smoked- so beware

It not only depends on where you get the tattoo but also on the tattoo artist the neck back ankle stuff where there is not a lot of fat is where its going to hurt the most especially if you get a tattoo artist with a "heavy" hand before i get any work done i take a few Advil just to ease the soreness after wards and DON'T go under the influence of alcohol or anything because that makes you bleed more i know some people say they just hurt period not true i fail a sleep while getting two of mine the one on my ankle however did hurt when he would hit the bone but i would ask around before just going and sitting in a chair and letting someone tattoo you usually the shops that are the busiest have some of the best artist go in and get a feel for the place and see how people are and ask people who are waiting if they have had any work done by any of the artist who are in the shop and get some feed back you can Also ask the artist if the have albums of work they have done and you can go threw and see what their own personal work looks like don't think this offends them because they know this is going to be something that last forever and you only want the best also pick up some A&D ointment wich is found in the baby section usually for your after care

Getting a tattoo done is uncomfortable, but not excrutiatingly painful. People often describe it as a hot scratching feeling - something like a cat scratch.

The extent of the discomfort does depend on where you're getting the tattoo done. Fleshy places generally hurt less than places that are closer to the bone, and skin which gets quite a bit of wear and tear (e.g. your outer forearm) is generally not so bad as skin that's more tender (e.g. the inside of your arm). To get an idea of the differences, try pinching your skin in different areas - you'll soon see which are more tender.

And, in reference to a couple of other points made: it's a bad idea to take anything for 'pain' in advance of getting a tattoo done - be it something like an over-the-counter painkiller, or something along the lines of alcohol or drugs. Any of these could mess about with you blood chemistry (e.g. thin your blood), making you harder to tattoo, and some of them will also impair your judgement - if you wouldn't drink-drive, why would you drink and get a tattoo? No reputable tattoo artist would work on anyone under the influence. But in all honesty, the discomfort is manageable and people get through it just fine.

Also, generally you can give blood after having a tattoo done. There's often a waiting period, and you'd have to check the specifics in your area, but I have a number of tattoos and give blood regularly.

Hope this helps!

it depends on a few factors.. where, how big and how.
i have also heard the pain described a thousand different ways.
using a tattoo gun (for the outline) it felt kind of between a cat repeatedly scratching and a burning sensation on the fleshly places, and a bit harsher over bony areas.

the filling in gun has much more needles so the pain is multiplied.

if you opt to do it by hand (the results are so much neater) the pain is more pricking and burning but for a much longer time.

of course with both methods the larger the tat the longer the pain.

it is a very bearable pain it's not so much that you have to pull away... and don't forget you can always finish later if it gets too much.

if you do get one use a reputable tattooist, and buy preparation H for healing it after (it really helps)\

hope this helps

I have one on my lower back and it just made me feel really tense all over, but my mom got one on the inside of her ankle at the same time and she said it hurt so bad that it made her sick (she doesn't have a very high tolerance for pain). It's just according to where you get it as to how much it is going to hurt and whether or not you have a high tolerance for pain. Someone above said you cannot donate your blood and that is not true, you just have to wait a year after getting a tat before you can donate. Some words of wisdom is to get a tat that means something to you and that you know you will like forever.

really it depends on where you want to put the tattoo and on if it has a large outline because the outline is a darker deeper color and it will hurt a lot more on an area that is boney or tight skinned mine is on the lower left side of my stomach and it tickled except near the hip and that was a little more painful bu even after 2 babies my belly still looks good tattoo wise

Honey, it is painful. My friend took a video when i got my tattoo and i showed it to people who are planning to have one, they were having second thoughts. But if you're willing to go through the pain..why not?

For me ... not much and I have a huge needle phobia..lol. The outline stings a little bit. But its not bad. As soon as they get to the shading, ect.... it feels like something is vibrating up aginst your skin. I have 6 tattoos. One on my back, ankle, chest, and 3 on my arms. The ankle stung the most, but it wasnt too bad at all. Good luck!

depends on where you get it. closer to the bone will hurt more. I got one on my upper arm and started falling asleep as he was doing the tattoo...so I did not have much pain at all.
