Interesting point; if you drive a dsg in full auto mode, one would think it's ok, but I'd want to get it in writing from DOT or DVLA

DSG gearboxes (Direct Shift Gearbox) are a combination of a manual gearbox with a auto 'box.

According to Volkswagen/Audi (who created it) the DSG "combines the ease of an automatic car with the efficiency and flexibility of a manual."

As a DSG can be driven in an automatic or a manual mode (with the tiptronic function) then a full manual license would probably be required.

An automatic license only allows you to drive a car which is fuly automatic only.

I hope this answers your queston.

A "normal" i.e manual licence covers you to drive either manual or auto, no problem.
A licence restricted to "automatic" entitles you only to drive those cars where no driver input is required in normal driving, i.e full auto. DSG bearboxes and semi-autos where you still change gear but without the clutch are not considered automatic, according to DVLA.
Hope that helps.
