I'm planning on getting a rather large tattoo soon, but it would be on my side and shoulder, quite possibly my hip as well. (don't worry, it's mostly just long ;) ) if I get pregnant will any of those areas stretch and distort the tattoo? I'm mainly conserned with my hips

am pregnant and have a tattoo -- Now what?
A pregnancy will affect your tattoo in different ways, depending on the placement. If your tattoo is near the stomach area, not only can it stretch, but there is no guarantee that it will go back to its original shape after the birth of your baby. Tattoos are definitely affected by stretch marks. Chances are if your mother or grandmother had stretch marks, you will too.
"When I was 18, I got a four-leaf clover on my pelvis. About three years later, I became pregnant and noticed that I now had a six-leaf clover. The clovers have all stretched and it looks like one green blob. I can't wait to have it removed." ~~Teresa

"I got my tattoo when I was 2 weeks pregnant and didn't have a clue I was! It's on my lower back and I was very worried about it getting distorted since it was new and being in a stretchy spot. I gained 50 pounds and luckily it's still perfect!" ~~Jess
Intricate designs such as tribal pieces, Celtic knots and geometric designs (such as circles) could wind up distorted, or worse, a blob. Simple designs such as clouds may look better.

If your tattoo is in the small of your back, it should not prevent you from getting an epidural. The ink from the tattoo is a permanent part of the dermis of the skin. The epidural needle passes through the epidermis, dermis and into an area near your spinal cord quite easily. You might want to consult with your doctor and anaesthesiologist to see what they recommend if you have concerns

I think it all depends on how yo take care of your skin in that area when you are pregnant, and how much weight you put on, the normal is 20-30 lbs. My friend had some stars with a lot of shading on her side/stomach area and she gained 33 lbs, and used alot of cocoa butter and her tattoo was fine after she gave birth. If you gain too much weight the skin stretches at a faster pace causing stretch marks, and could damage your tattoo. If you are really concerned wait until you have your kids, get back in shape and use the tattoo on your side idea to treat your self......

Personally, I would wait till after I was through with pregnancy, and having all my children. My body was never the same after I had my two girls, and Im finally done. I got my first tattoo recently, and it definitly was worth the wait. Granted, its on my shoulder blade and small, but im still thankful I waited. If your going to be getting a large tattoo, wouldn't you want it as perfected as possible? I wouldn't risk it because as you know, tattoo's are permanent. Whats waiting going to hurt ?

A girl I used to know has a tat of a dolphin around her belly button. She had 2 kinds since and the tat didn't distort. It depends on how well you take care of it during the pregnancy. Keep it moisturized, use vitamin E.

i don't know. it's a concern i have as well and have decide NOT to do my ribcage until after i have kids to make sure that i don't have some crazy looking tattoo later. you never know how your body will stretch when you're pregnant. some lucky people end up with a little basketball belly and other people end up swelling like a hippo. you just never know!

do keep your skin moisturised when you do get pregnant tho as this will help your skin.

My daughter had a small tattoo done on her belly and it stretched when she was pregnant. Now, it is not as good as before. I suggest you wait until after.

my friend had a tatoo done on her hip and was told by the tatooist that it will stretch and not go back if she had children and would be all distorted and wonky, so its probably best to wait till after u have kids...even tho she got her tatoo done anyway!

It's possible. It depends how high you carry the baby and how big you get.

A friend of mine had a butterfly on her hip (on top of the hip bone, basically). After her pregnancy, it looked like a teradactyl with a road map superimposed on top of it.
