you know, marks and spencers sell plain fruit cakes, plainly iced and un iced, which are very very reasonably priced and different sizes, you could use one of them and take time to decorate it yourself, really personalise it, visit an icing shop for ideas,
but
the best wedding cake i ever tasted was brought back from barbados.
it tasted very much like a cross between christmas pudding and bread pudding.. yum yum

I have seen literally more than 1000 weddings from my position as a waiter. Many many people opt for the Homemade cakes. Nothing strange about it at all, often it carries more meaning. Lots of people just have a Styrofoam cake with icing on it and make a huge basic looking cake called a "kitchen cake" that nobody sees until its cut up and served. Some people have wheels of cheese stacked on top of each other like a pile of coins. There is no rules. Nobody judges. Cakes are one of those things that seem so important in the moment but will be forgotten extremely quickly. So many couples never even come back for their leftovers and top tiers, it just seems unimportant in the afterglow of the event. I can definitely endorse saving as much money as you can on the cake (without it looking awful) because its an epic waste of resources you could be spending on a car or baby clothes etc. Weddings are expensive enough as it is.

I saw one in a local shop,it was a three tier wedding cake made from very fancy cupcakes. It was very different and beautiful to look at,Your guests could have their own cupcakes instead of a slice.Take a look in a couple of shops and make your own design inspired by one of theirs perhaps.Good luck and hope your big day is fantastic.

i got mine from marks and spencers for 20 pounds and got the florist to make a corsage for the top, in the kitchen i had two other cutting cakes (also from marks and spencer ) one was an iced maderia and the other an iced chocolate. in total for 80 people it was less than 50 pounds and a lot less stressful .GoodLuck!
