Markandeya was allowed a life span of 16 years while taking birth. Markandeya got the upadesa of Mrityunjaya Mantra and chants the same. When Yama appears to take a way of the life of Markandeya on complertion of his life span, he embraces Sivling and Yama could not take a way his life. Shiva appears and defeats Yama the Mrityu and blesses Markandeya with eternal life span and he becomes Chiranjivi. Since Shiva defeated Mrityu he is named as Mahamrityunjaya.
this mantra is chanted to get ful life span and get rid of untimely accidental deaths.

Which is the biggest fear of a Human ? DEATH . What is mritu ? ENEMY So which is the biggest (MAHA) enemy for human ? SIVA is endless ( or deathless ). SIVA is believed to give us moksha. When you know the meaning (let us give a chance to someone to ask the meaning of that mantra )it is clear . Then you will know the purpose also.
