It's addictive and self-destructive. It leaves scars, and it risks infection. Psychologically, it's unhealthy because you're not addressing the stressors that lead you to cut in the first place, but rather coving up the symptoms, a lot like if you were drinking or taking drugs to block out having to think about things that were bothering you. You need to deal with the cause, rather than cover it up, or else it's probably not going to go away.
People do it because it works.

Cutting yourself is the same as doing drugs.
By causing pain, you are making your brain release chemicals to make you feel good. You can get a mental addiction to this feeling, and get worse. Besides the physical scars, you get long-lasting emotional problems.
If you do practice Self Harm, you should see a counselor to find the best course to fix this. If you continue it too long, you can become dependent on it.
Haha, enlighten me on what I said that needs 2 thumbs down? Other than someone thinking that self-harm is normal, or someone that doesn't believe the brain releases chemicals..

Infection, pain, and hurting oneself is no way to get positive
attention, or release stress. It's bad because, it just causes more stress and rejection.
Of course sports also cause injuries, but these are not done on purpose. If one cares to live a little, get positive attention, and relieve stress, try picking a sport you'd like.

I don't believe it is that bad depending on the reason of 'why' you are cutting. If it is because of a tool for attention, or because of some dumb@$$ highschool drama, or because you're 'goth/emo' etc. Then it is ridiculous. If it is for knowledge and scientific self studies or self surgery (well-researched and practiced that is) or reasons similar I do not think of it as a bad thing. I believe so many people do it because of trend, or because they want attention or want to create false experiences. But this is just my opinion.

cutting is a self destructive outlet for frustrations in a persons life that aren't being dealt with in a positive manner. in a way it falls in the same catagories as anorexia and bulemia. it's a way of having control over your own body. yes, there are a lot of people doing it, but it is a symptom of bigger issues. there are better ways of controling your body to deal with inner frustrations. investigate local gyms to find out about yoga or kick boxing classes.

Reasons not to cut
You can hit a major vein and bleed out and die.
High risk of infection
Pysically harming yourself wont make any emotional problems better, just makes you more screwed up in the head.
No reason is great enough to harm yourself over.

It's bad because it damages you physically and emotionally. Sadly, many people do it as an ineffective way of relieving their emotional stress and pain.
