Knowing the difference between right and wrong guides my actions. That concept existed before organized religion ever existed. That's the yardstick that I use.

Yes to everything but the ancestors question. I'm responsible for my own actions, no one else's. As for the rest... why would being spiritual or not have any effect at all on those things? There doesn't need to be some... mystical force inside you in order for your actions to effect others, anymore than you need spiritual power to make toast.

I guide myself. I behave because that's what a good human being does. I don't kill people because it's wrong, not because some book tells me not to. I pay my taxes, drive a gas-saving car, and save money because I want a good future. I don't do drugs, don't drink, don't smoke, don't cheat, and I don't swear that often, either. And yet I'm an atheist and a lot of people can't understand that. I believe everything I do will one day have an impact on my children and their future once I have children.

My actions are guided by reason, applied to evidence. My impact on the future consists of two parts: the genes that I have passed on to my children, and the knowledge that I have created and am teaching to others (such as by participating in this forum). Just as I am both the genetic and intellectual creation of my successors, I am the genetic and intellectual creation of my forebears.

I believe my actions affect others that's what "guides" me, not the fear of eternal damnation.
There are about 6.5 billion people on the planet, I will have a negligible effect.
I'm here because my ancestors didn't make fatal decisions before procreation.

1. Laws, conscience, convention, conventionalities, criteria, decency, ethic, ethos, goodness, honesty, honor, ideal, imperative, integrity, moral code, morality, mores, natural law, nature, practice, principles, standard, standards, values.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. No.
[If you came to realise your God (or whatever you believe makes you "spiritual") was a creation of man, would all "guides" vanish for you in an instant? That'd be scary.]
