Grommets are used most often to treat a condition known as glue ear. This is where a glue-like fluid has built up behind the ear drum, in the middle ear .This is often due to dysfuntion of the eustachian tube that balances the air pressure in the middle ear with the air pressure outside. A grommet is a small tube (see picture)that is inserted through the ear drum. Grommets are also used to treat patients who get very frequent ear infections or have retraction pockets in their ear drums.

Grommets are tiny ventilation tubes (pipes) inserted into the eardrum to help drain any fluid and allows air to enter the middle ear, hearing improves immediately. This is commonly done for young children who suffer from "glue ear" a disorder in which viscous fluid accumulates in the middle ear, this sticky fluid prevents the ossicles from vibrating, leading to deafness. It is caused by the malfunction of the Eustachian tube which does not open as it should in response to swallowing and yawning. This causes a vacuum in the middle ear leading to inflammation and the production of fluid which gradually thickens. Most grommets stay in place for 6-12 months before naturally falling out as the eardrum heals naturally.

General a gromit is a round piece of rubber with a hole in it and are used in many applications apart from the one already mentioned. A grommet is a bit like a rubber wedding ring that fits into holes on elevtrical equipment so that wires can be passed through it and not be cut by sharp edges of metal boxes etc.
