I'm in the middle of an important paper, but every 5 minutes a window comes up and says my computer needs to be restarted for installing automatic updates, and will shut down in 5 minutes. I keep pushing the option to "restart later" but it keeps coming back up all the time. Can I make it stop this, so that I can just restart it whenever I want?

What it's doing now is automatically downloading and installing updates. You probably want it to download and then notify you because you don't want to forget and open yourself up to issues. Start-control panel-Automatic Updates and choose the option to download but not install then when you shut down you can click the shield for shut down and install or click on the underlined words at bottom to shut down with out installing.

the only way to get rid of the auto update window is to restart your computer... if it anoys you that much you should turn auto update off... although this means you must remember to update manually....

I am confused what you said...

are you going to print the important paper?

if you restart the computer, then your printer will stop and not going to print again.

if you don't save them, you will lose them
