I've gotten this quite a bit, actually. Not here, though, just in real life situations and on some forums...

When a person asks a question, recitation of a Bible verse -- no matter how profound one may find it -- is not a suitable response unless the question is something along the lines of, "Which verse says 'blahblahblah'?"

Am I the only one who is kind of annoyed by it?

Getting annoyed is the same as judging? Wow... since when, pray tell?

It's not a matter of wanting to hear the "Word of God" or not... it's a matter of wanting a valid response to questions. I'd rather receive an answer that took some thought, fire up those neurons! Don't just recite a few lines from the Bible... it's almost robotic. I can (and have) read the bible for myself. I've even studied it carefully in many classes, believe me, I know what's in it.

It's the same for me with any quote, though. Quoting someone else and substituting their words for your thoughts isn't really very helpful to any of the parties involved.

I assure you I am neither bitter nor critical. I am merely asking why it is people do this. I've said before: I am a Religious Studies major in college right now. This is what I do. I study religion. My fellow students and I get into many discussions about various traditions, often they are Christian religions and the Bible comes up very often...

What I am saying is: A quotation is no substitute for actual thought, so why treat it as such?

I understand the Bible is very important to a lot of people, but that doesn't mean those people need to shut off their brains and let the Bible think through everyday situations FOR them.

If someone uses a bible verse as a response, then backs it up with something of their OWN thoughts, it is not annoying. However, if someone just wanders by and drops a quote on my head, what good is it going to do?

When I engage in a conversation with someone, I want to interact with that person. If I wanted quotations from the Bible without the commentary/input of the person(s) to whom I am speaking, I'd go get my Bible and read it again.

My irritation doesn't stem from people not thinking like I do. In fact, it is quite the opposite. My irritation stems from people refusing to give their honest thoughts.

People give a Biblical reply because they believe the teachings of the Bible. If you believe the Bible to be the word of God, then it mystifies me why that would bother you.

If you do not believe the Bible is the word of God, why would somebody else's beliefs irritate you? They ARE telling you what they think when they quote the Bible because they believe it corresponds to the discussion you're having with them.

Your irritation appears to stem from an attitude which gets aggrivated when people don't think like you. If you just accept the fact that there are loving people who look at things through a different prism, you won't get upset; you'll learn to love people more.

Also, thinking people are dishonest about their true feelings when they give you a Biblical response is a clear indication the problem rests in you, not your friends.

It may not be a suitable answer to every question, but there are some questions asked no here that lend to using a bible verse in it. When someone challenges Christian to a specific subject it is often covered in the bible so why not go straight to the source? No to mention some atheist here are fond of misquoting the bible so then you must show the verse to catch them in their lie.

You are, of course, quite right. I suspect that in many cases it is just a habit; in too many cases, it is just intellectual slovenliness. Peope don't think because they can't: either they lack the innate capability, or they simply have not learned how to do so. It is not a trivial art; I have been working on it for decades, and some of the most important ideas I have encountered have been within the past few years.

It is irritating. A question is asking for opinion or fact, depending on the style of question. A bible verse is simply a quote and doesn't mean anything, it's not an answer. I guess it demonstrates the bible quoters as not being free-thinkers.

Most folks are just lazy, and find it easier to quote a book than have an original thought. Thinking requires effort; reciting requires memorization.
I haven't experienced what you described, but would definitely find it annoying.

Some Bible verses are very profound. For example, look up Proverbs 11:22.

They are misleading the people into thinking that they have the knowledge of the ' unknown'.

We are all spiritual in the form of our souls. This body will perish one day but not the soul which is in this body for the present.

We can live without bible but not without our souls!

that's kind of interesting that you'd say that cuz personally i've never really had anyone do that to me and even if i maybe have heard it a few times, people who do it get critized on the spot for doing it!
