as long as the tattoo means something to you, there is no way it could be ghetto. it would be a pretty nice way to honor your grandma. I have often thought about getting one of my Dad. He was a way cool guy.
Go for it--

Not that I think it would be "ghetto", but you would need to do quite an extensive amount of research to find a really great parlour that maybe even specializes in tattood portaiture. I have never seen a good one, but maybe that was just because of the artist. However, as far as tattoos go, I have none but am quite the avid fan (love art, etc) , and I'm sure there is some sort of etiquette with this sort of thing as to whether or not it is considered "ghetto" or not.
But really I always thought a tattoo was a form of SELF expression, so who really cares if OTHER people think it is ghetto?
If you're interested in the tattoo of your grandmother for your own reasons, perhaps you adore her that much, etc, then I think it would be a wonderful gesture, something that would show your love (in your own way) for someone that you hold dear to you.
One of my good friends has a tattoo on her shoulder that says (in curvise) DADDY'S GIRL with a rose under it, I do believe... She just loves her dad though, and he did object to it at first but he did realize after a while (it's been a good 6 years now) that if she could get something PERMANENTLY inked on her body that had something to do with him, it was monumentous for her. She decided to celebrate her love for her pop by putting it on her arm where everyone can see it, and he understands that now.
Perhaps you might consider that the old-timers may not at first understand the gesture to fully appreciate it at first. Or even at all. But I personally do think it's a nice gesture. It's not something that you'd eventually be embarrassed about having inked on your arm, because it is really a testament to a loved one.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Don't forget to do plenty of research though, a good artist is a must. Hell a GREAT artist. And GREAT is an understatement. Check all prior works, etc. Be sure that they can take an image and create an outline that you would agree to, and if you would like that outline on your body, or, if that outline turns out to NOT look like your grandmother afterall. Do weigh all options. (As far as artist, size, location.) And if you do settle on a tattoo artist, be sure to create a rapport with that individual, and ask them serious questions about whether they have done such a piece before, and also, with such pieces, which parts of the body are easiest to work with and will have the best finished product. (Ie: Contour of a shoulder or the ridge of a shoulder blade can drastically change the image and/or may stretch or elongate a face/facial feature, etc.)

Take it easy,
miR :)

What the hell is Kate talkin about? She has to be old or something! Its not ghetto at all, its a good gesture. You can have a tat of your Granny and still look classy! I have two tats and plan on getting more. I won't put any on my arms my legs, or neck only places where I can easily cover if I need to.

I've never understood the term ghetto. I don't believe that a tat can be ghetto unless you do a complete mural on your body showing the strife and sacrifice and hardships of people. A pic of your grandmother would basically mean (to me) that you love your g-ma and want her to be with you wherever you are. Kind of like having a guardian angel at your side at all times, since that is what grandmothers are often looked to as.

Oh I think its very nice. Kat on Inked does some fantastic work. If you love your grandmother I'm sure that would be one of the greatest honors you can give her.
The only thing I have wondered is when you get old and your skin starts to wrinkle and sag wont the tattoos look kinda funny?

Absolutely not. Many people honor those they love or care about by getting a tattoo of them. This is nothing new, and is no indication of being "ghetto."

might be a little ghetto, but it also can be really classy.

now if you write "granny" in those big gothic letters accross your stomach, *that* would be ghetto! ;)

tats can most definitely go along with a classy look. its all in the style, placement and how you work with it..

I don't know. It's not "ghetto" , but it's not something I'd do. If she's someone you greatly admire in your life, go for it! That's a great way to honor family!
