Actually the French were military power for centuries.
During the Napoleonic Era, the French Army went on a killing spree, conquering everyone east of them (the Germans, Italians, Poles, Slavs and anyone else who stood in Napoleon's way). The only thing that stopped them was a Russian winter.
Okay, in recent years have the French really failed as military powers.

I guess you didn't get the message: French bashing is over. It was a fad but it's outlived its political life. You ought to go to France, spend a week in Paris. It's a whole lot differert, mon ami. Good looking women, too.

Without the French, we would NOT be the USA. It was their involvement which proved decisive in our vicory of the Revolutionary war. Without the French, we'd still be subjects of the queen.
