You will get what is called a tour of duty request sheet.
You fill in about 4 places you'd like to go, from a pool of assignments.
What you get, might be any of those, or what they need.
MPs right now, seems like they are going to Iraq.
Mostly.
If you are looking to get in to active duty, and don't want much action, become a master-at arms in the Navy.
Then again, it all depends. You might get an assinment in the U.S.
I know when I was in the navy, assignments were gotten based on who scored out of the graduating class at my school.
So the assignments were:
Yokosuka, Japan
Navmag, Subic Bay, PI
San Diego, CA
Bayonne, New Jersey
Adak, Alaska
Some others.
I scored third of my class. First pick guy chose Japan, Second pick guy chose New Jersey.
I had my pick of the list left, took San Diego.
I hear most places do it that way, but the army, I don't know. Ask your recruiter about how assignments are detailed.
I know in the navy, it is called a Naval Enlisted Assignment Detailer...or was in the 80s.
I am retired, it was a lot of fun, and challenging.
Well worth it. I live a good life now.
Good luck.

What are you conversing approximately Grumpypepsi? You do understand that MP stands for "militia Police" perfect? And that the fortress Jackson Police and all the different bases police are MP's. while deployed MP's do comparable issues that infantry do (finding on the unit), yet as quickly as we are stateside we are the army's regulation enforcement. besides, as for the question, turning out to be an MP is particularly like turning out to be the different undemanding MOS interior the army. once you're taking your ASVAB and qualify for the interest you have them positioned it on your settlement. Then once you deliver you would be off to fortress Leonard timber, Missouri the place you will bypass via OSUT (One Station Unit education). OSUT skill which you will do your undemanding wrestle education and stepped forward guy or woman education all promptly. Later you may attempt to get on a bases SRT (particular reaction group) that's the army's version of SWAT, a ok-9 handler, and all that different exciting stuff. And merely that may assist you out along with your destiny i will enable you recognize that some civilian police departments do in comparison to hiring MP's because of the fact we are experienced to guard situations in yet differently than they are so it rather is harder to retrain us the way the opt for. a secure wager might to be to touch the police branch which you think of you opt for to artwork at and ask them approximately their regulations on it. numerous civilian police departments desire you have been in some thing like infantry. good success on despite you opt for.

When you join you fill out what is called a dream sheet, you pick three or four state side locations and three overseas (including Alaska and Hawaii). From there you may get your choice of assignment but don't hold your breath. I got my second choice for my second assignment. Once stationed you can request to do a swap with another soldier at the location you want to go to, both you and the other soldier must meet certain requirements (MOS position, rank, time left at command) and you and the other soldier are responsible for all moving expenses if approved.

you can request anything you want but your request will consist of you righting down 8 choices in the US and 4 over seas (or something like that)
they may or may not look at your list. But even if you get the base you want you will probably go to a unit that will deploy overseas every 2 or 3 years.

If you didn't get "Station of Choice" in your enlistment contract, then you will be at the needs of the Army. The Army has, however, realized that happy soldiers are soldiers that get stationed where they want to be. The Army is bending over backwards to try an help the soldier in this aspect. When you get to Basic, you will fill out your "Dream Sheet". This is a form where you list your stations of choice. The Army will then try to get you where you want to be.

On your first enlistment you actually have a lot more say than they will allow you to believe. You can ask for a certain place, lets say Bragg, and if there is no opening for you, you can be put on a wait list. Just don't sign your contact unless you see Bragg on it. I guarantee you a slot will appear, seemingly out of thin air. It goes the same for MOS. JUST DON'T SIGN until you get what you want. The liaison is the one that can get it for you. And don't listen to there lies!!!!!!! I am speaking from experience. The people who answered before me didn't stand up for themselves, I suppose. I wanted Benning. They told me no way. I said I was not going to reenlist unless I got it. Guess what...I got Benning. But that was after I had been in a while and learned how to play their game. They will want you to select three options. You don't have to do that. I also had a buddy on his first enlistment who wanted to be a medic. His liaison told him no and he walked out. What do you know, not a week later his recruiter called and said he could be a medic. You just have to hold out. I hope you listen.

You can request all you want! But they send you where they want to! They are looking for MP's for Iraq I noticed!
I don't know about now, but the military use to seldom have multiple members of a family in a combat situation!

Needs of the Army first and for your first tour odds are not too great you are staying safe at home. An MP in the Army....odds are Iraq or something in support of it.

you have no say in it at all
once you complete your advanced individual training you will receive orders to report to a base somewhere in the world
if i were you, what i would do is sign up for the reserves, and then when you are in AIT say that you want to enlist in the regular army.. you will probably have to report to your reserve unit near your house for a few months after youre done with training, but then you can say that you will enlist in the regular army if you can choose your first station.. they want people in the regular army, so they will do whatever it takes
and remember, until you get on the plane for basic, nothing you have signed means anything.. you can change the conditions of your enlistment without fear of any penalties
