Petroleum has MANY different compounds. The gaseous components contain light compounds methane and propane can be used in heating, fuel, making electricity. Other lights such as ethylene and propylene are common components used in making plastics. Light liquid components are also used in making plastics but are very common as fuel. Gasoline is mostly toluene. Karosene, jet-fuel are heavier fuel fractions. Benzene is a very useful aromatic ring compound used to make many of the pharmacuticals we use. Heavy components are commonly used as oils for lubrications. And the most heavy, asphaltenes and tars, are used to make roofs and roads. Some of these cpounds especially aromatics can be toxic and carcinogenic. Burning of any fossil fuels releases CO2 and contributes to green house effect

Good heavens! Take your car and put it in the oil heated garage and walk on your synthetic* shoes in your plastic* rain coat to the food store to get food grown with fertilizer* and wrapped in shrink wrap*. Get out your cell phone* and notice it was Made in China (shipped with petroleum fuel)
Actually, you probably don't get light from petroleum products unless you make candles partly of parafin* because other products are cheaper to make electricity.
Natural gas is not directly from petroleum, but propane is.
Enough?

* (made from petroleum)
