pulse refers to the short burst of the activity followed before and after by no activity. Unlike other immunisation that are done as an ongoing programme, polio immunisation is done as a regular immunisation as well as "pulse" polio immunisation: a short burst where as many children are immunised who are normally difficult to reach out to. the pulse increases the herd immunity (the overall strength of the group against the virus) which in turn protects each individual against the virus.

it has to be given at a regular interval like between 2 beats of an artery which constitutes a pulse.
