If it is with regards to time, it tells where is the position of the sun.
AM = ante meridian (before meridian line)
PM = post meridian (after meridian line)
Noon = directly on top of the meridian line
Meridian = an imaginary great circle on the surface of the earth passing through the north and south poles at right angles to the equator; "all points on the same meridian have the same longitude"
Example:
11am = the sun is before the meridian line
01pm = the sun is shining after the meridian line
12 noon = the sun is at it's highest point and is shining directly on the meridian line.

AM means amplitude modulation. It relies on changes in signal strength (height of a wave) whereas FM (frequency modulation) relies in changes in signal frequency (distance between waves.)
