My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 2 years now (in late July it will be 2 years). But, before we started dating, he had a girlfriend about 3 years ago. When we first started dating a year and a half ago, they had been broken up for a year. I knew that he was really hung up over her for a long time b/c one of my best friends, who was best friends with him as well, told me. The funny thing is, though he says that he was really hurt by the relationship, she lived in Brazil and he had never even met her in person. They had an "internet relationship" in which they met online and began dating and maintained a relationship by talking on the phone, talking on webcam, etc. They dated for only 9 months, but I guess she really impacted him cause he told me had dreams about her, before he started dating me. But to this very day, he still mentions her name and the other day made a joke "why can't you be an art major like her?" and I got upset and he told me was joking.

Whoa! I think his joke was very inappropriate and hurtful too. I am also concerned why he had a relationship with someone online for so long yet neither of two made a point to see each other. Perhaps, that's why they broke up. I guess I would have too many questions to ask about his ex if I were in a similar relationship and I might worry that he would have "friends" like that down the line and think it's innocent fun. To answer your question, I'm sure it's just the idea of her but if you have to think about it too much maybe you would be happier with someone who doesn't have a past that pushes your buttons. If you have been dating for two years and he still mentions a girl that he has never met face to face like she is who you should aspire to be like....something is wrong with this guy!!!

A guy should never compare a woman to a previous woman!! I would have smacked him. Whether or not he is still hung up with his ex, you have to make a decision whether or not you are wanting to be compared. If you feel that his feelings for her isn't 'over', ask him.

i think yes........ even though he may not be in love with her, i dont think he loves u THAT much...... even though they broke up, but he will keep comparing you with all........
if he really loves u, you'd just the perfect girl and the best girl for her in the world.... and he'd never tell a joke like that.......
or even he may tell u that he does love u, but u aren't his dream girl or his perfect girl.
