The redness probably indicates infection. Infections need antibiotics to be cured or they will just get worse. Please call a vet and see what can be worked out before your pet has to lose a paw or worse.

It depends on what it is. If it is or was something in his paw, and developed an infection, then clean it thoroughly, you may have to shave his paw to find the cause. If something is still there it needs to be removed and the area kept clean. So you may need to go to a vet and have it removed. If it is another kind of bump, say a tumor or something, taking him to the vet is the best advise anyone can give you.
Ironically I just had my dog to the vet for a swollen paw. She must have gotten something in it like a splinter or something. There was nothing in it when I had her to the vet. But the vet gave her an anti-biotic, shaved and cleaned the wound thoroughly, and gave me pills (more antibiotics) to cure the infection. And some special surgical soap to wash and keep it clean with.
Many house pets end up getting something in their paws, and get it out. They then lick it because it makes it feel better, but what happens is it heals on the outside, but not the inside. And it festers and gets infected. It is the infection that causes the problem and needs to be treated with anti-biotics if bad. I have cleaned my dogs paws myself when this has happened, and it works most of the time, but not always. It could also be a bite from another animal, and that needs special care.
Take your dog to the vet to make sure it isn't something other than an infection.

I know it costs money to go to the vet but if he has an infection it could spread and make him very sick. If you want to be sure he will get better you'll need to see the vet. Call one and ask if you can make payments. Most are willing to work something out with you. It's not that expensive. If it's just this swollen paw it shouldn't bee too bad. Maybe $50? Call the vet. You don't want him suffering with it or getting worse.

I would go to the vet. Someone I know had a dog with a large red bump on it's toe and it turned out to be a Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor. Which is a form of cancer. I'm not saying this is what your dogs has but you are better safe than sorry and if it is cancer the sooner it is diagnosed and treatment can start the better.

Just go to the damn vet. Nobody can diagnose your dog's red bump over Yahoo. It could be anything from an insect bite to a malignant cancerous tumor, infection, wart, or anything in between. You agreed to be responsible for that dog when you took it in, so cough up the dough and go to the vet.

It sounds a bit like a plantar's wart. I don't know how you would cure it without going to a vet. I do know that a vet could diagnose it for sure and remove it if it is a plantar's wart. Sometimes you just have to go to the vet.

Can you be more specific? Is it on the top of his paw, bottom, between his toes? What does it look like? Is it oozing or bleeding? Does it look like he has anything stuck in it, either now or another time? Is he limping?
The more info the better.
