If you want rides go to Magic Mountain in Valencia. Knotts Berry Farm is another good place to go.

Knott's Berry Farm is fun if you are looking for an amusement park.
For just plain fun, go to Huntington Beach Pier and walk around. Balboa Island is fun too (just a little further south on PCH from Huntington).
Hollywood Blvd during the day is fun and is right by Rodeo Drive. The Santa Monica Pier and fun area is good too.
The Queen Mary in Long Beach has a tour you could take.
There is a shopping about every 10 miles in any direction, so the girls may like that.
If they like museums, there are a ton of them. The La Brea Tar Pits are really cool.
I grew up in LA, but moved a few years ago and these are some of the places I enjoyed when I was young girl.

i think with kids that age, they're going to want something to do rather than stuff to look at
California Science Center
The Aquarium of the Pacific
Maybe a day at the beach, weather permitting. Venice is fun because there's always someone putting on a show.
for something more low key, consider Travel Town and the Carousel at Griffith Park
