I've known a lot of kids and parents of kids who've gone through. The generally come back a little more serious and mature. They often go in acting like goofy Junior High school kids but when they come out, they are ready to study and get through college or start their jobs. Still goofy when they drink tho. And quite a few of them come out with limps and other mild disabilities from poorly treated injuries.

I'm Korean. And I have served in the ROK army for 26 months. In my case, I served just before the DMZ where is between S.Korea and N.Korea.

As a matter of fact, it was not easy. Because I had to operate my job according to the fixed schedule and senior's order from early in the morning. But during this period, I could learn who to operate in a organization and who to prepare my future. In my opinion, it will be the most strict organization in my life. The fact that I finished military service successfully gave me courage whenever I frustrated or depressed and where ever I am. During this period, I could tidy my mind and observe the talent of myself.

Although most of Korean men have a time risk in which we spend about 2 years in Military service, we could have more valuable experience that other people who don't have national defense obligation have never had during this period.

Nowadays the mandatory term is getting shorter and shorter. And condition of living is getting better and better.

I'm not a Korean male, but I asked one of my language exchange partners about this a few weeks ago.

"Was it interesting?"

"No, it's never interesting."

Ha ha ha!
