Call around and find a reputable firearms dealer, if you don't already know one. Let him give you an appraisal of the weapon's condition, and he will tell you the weapon's model, as well. Any good dealer will have a cop of the Blue Book of firearms Values, which will give you an idea of the weapon's market value.
Do NOT deal with a pawnbroker, as they are all liars and legalized thieves!

Do you have any idea what model it is? S&W makes several different .38 caliber revolvers worth very little to as much as several hundred dollars.
For instance; a used, blued, model 10, four inch tapered barrel, .38 cal., might be worth $100. But a used stainless steel, model 640, two inch barreled, round butt, .38 cal. can be worth $450.00
