I am part French (1/16th) - and I took French in both high school and college. It is a joy to run across people who speak French here in the states - and I can act as a translator, but honestly - my employment opportunities would be vastly enriched had I taken Spanish.
There is SUCH a HUGE need for people to speak Spanish - particularly here in Texas. The programs that help teach English to new immigrants are popping up everywhere. The Public schools are paying high dollar for bi-lingual teachers... many businesses are as well.
Someone fluent in Spanish can really increase their earning potential in the US... and money doesn't hurt when it comes to the "chicks" either.
(Now, if I could only move closer to the Canadian boarder in order to use my French.... Hmmmmm...)
Aurevoir mon cher. Bon Chance! Paix.

If you learn Spanish, you can travel through all of South America, study abroad in places like Argentina and Costa Rica, and a growing population of Americans speak Spanish as a first language... so the benefits are obvious.
With French, many African and Arab countries have it as either an official or unofficial language. Africa will be a place where you can find many jobs in the future in international buisness.
I would also recommend Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, or Thai... all growing economies with many opportunities

Spanish is easier to learn. Both spanish and french are kind of exotic to hear sopken. It all depends. Spanish to me is better to learn because there are alot of jobs that will pay you more money if you speak spanish and english. But french is sexy to hear. Japanese is another language that will get you far in a job but it is hard to learn. I would say spanish though.

French is nice, but spanish is a hell of a lot more practical, unlike French where it is relatively rarely spoken outside of academia.
Not to mention, spanish is a lot more fluid and smooth sounding. French has the romantic tie to it because of the images we get of france, but the langauge itself is pretty nasal.
