We weren't. We evolved.

I have thought of that and considering Adam and Eve were the only people who were at one point "perfect" made in the image of God and the rest of us are all suffering to a certain extent the consequence(s) of sin having entered in... Hence my bucked teeth that won't line up enough for me to bite a piece of pizza like a "normal" person.

Well, I wonder how much like Adam and Eve we really look like? Perhaps it isn't really all about the external image so much as it might be the trichotomy of our makeup being Flesh, Mind and Spirit? Similar to the Trinity of God being, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

Well, I just said a whole lot of nothing. Just mere pondering as you. You must have some take. What is it?

The crown of God's work was the creation of man in His image and according to His likeness. This means that man was placed on earth as God's representative, and that He resembles God in certain ways.

Just as God is a Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), so man is a tripartite being (spirit, soul, and body). Like God, man has intellect, a moral nature, the power to communicate with others, and an emotional nature that transcends instinct.

There is no thought of physical likeness here. In contrast to animals, man is a worshiper, an articulate communicator, and a creator.

There is an allowance for or even an intimation of the Trinity in verse 26: Then God [Elohim, plural] said [singular verb in Hebrew], "Let Us [plural] make man in Our image . . . ."

Col. 1:15 says, talking about Jesus...He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Was Jesus invisible when on earth? No. So "image" must mean something other than appearances.

Rom. 1:20 says "For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made..." Here it talks of God's QUALITIES as being invisible. So image refers to qualities possessed. We were created with the same qualities as God...we have the same emotions, the ability to love, our sense of justness, etc.

In Genesis Chapter One God said let us create man in our image. In Chapter Two God shows how man was formed form the dust and a spirit breathed into him and the two became a living soul...This is the image of God being eternal with a spirit unlike the animals who are merely flesh and blood man has a spirit and the body and spirit make one living soul...God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit and these make up one God.

Yes, I believe this is literal.
Humans projected themselves onto God when they created the notion of actually having a God, not the other way around. This also assumes God made the earth for humans. Whos to say he (assuming he's male) didn't make it for dolphins or ants or trees or for ALL OF US. Either way, the idea that we look like God is a completely narcissistic event.

My personal belief is that we are created in God's image from a spiritual and perhaps intellectual standpoint. Not physical.

As I understand it, God indeed made us in his image. It was not the physical however which related to him but rather the intangible, which is the soul.

Yes, but remember that image is now distorted because of sin.

If you are referring to God the Father, who created us in his image, he has no body. St. Paul says God is spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. It is our nature which makes us in the "image and likeness of God."The following is an explanation of this teaching. "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them."218 Man occupies a unique place in creation: (I) he is "in the image of God"; (II) in his own nature he unites the spiritual and material worlds; (III) he is created "male and female"; (IV) God established him in his friendship.I. "In the Image of God"Of all visible creatures only man is "able to know and love his creator."219 He is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake,"220 and he alone is called to share, by knowledge and love, in God's own life. It was for this end that he was created, and this is the fundamental reason for his dignity:What made you establish man in so great a dignity? Certainly the incalculable love by which you have looked on your creature in yourself! You are taken with love for her; for by love indeed you created her, by love you have given her a being capable of tasting your eternal Good.221Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons. And he is called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, to offer him a response of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead.
Peace and every blessing!

I believe that it means we were given souls and the ability to judge what was righteous and what was wrong.
