Public. Private schools may force your child to memorize more things, but it takes away normal interaction with other children. Most people who go to private schools (that I have known) are quite socially inept.

My son is in private school (Christian). We have him there for religious reasons (he requested it) but mostly because we did not want him to be taught by public school teachers. PS teachers may be great educators but they are restricted on some things that they may teach to be politically correct, especially in history. I also want my son in a school that recognizes the importance of respecting the nation's flag. Also, there is certainly a smaller student to teacher ratio which a better situation for both. In addition I prefer uniforms as there is no competition then as to who has the "coolest" or more recent, etc fads of clothing. Besides, I am amazed when I see some of the PS students at the bus stop when I see what they are wearing. Those are just a few of the main reasons.
BTW Da Vinci, my 9 year old son is so inept every time my husband and I are invited to formal occasion that asks not to bring anyone under 18, we are told they will make an exception for him because of manners. School is a big influence I agree, but public or private it is the parent's job to teach manners.

I believe you should look up the scores at your state educational site and see how the schools around you did.
Private and Public schools can be both good or both bad. It still depends on the school and who is running it. I've seen good from both and I've seen bad.
A co-worker had his children at a christian school. Around middle school age a new student arrived, one that the parents were having problems with so they put him in a private school. This "new" student influenced other students to try drugs.
At Ed-Data you can check out schools performance. Click on State, County, District or School. You're going to find a lot of information that will help you make a wise decision for your child.
My daughter, before moving, checked out all the schools in the city her husband was being transfered to. She didn't get in the top one but the second. Now I must tell you she is "very" involved with her kids. She helps out at bookfairs. She is a great resource in getting funds for the school. She just knows these things from having been in charge of fund raising events. When it comes time for her kids to move up a grade she already knows where she'd like them to be. Sometimes she gets just what she wants. But never will she stand for it to be the "wrong" teacher. Be involved with your child and you will see it is the best investment you can make.

Save your money, go public. Just be really nice to the people in the office, paraprofessionals. They know what's going on behind the scenes, what teachers are above and behind and otherwise. Both of my daughters are about to skip their current grade and they are in public school. I scope out the teachers a year before hand and make sure my kids get into their class. But what it boils down to is you! Your child is an investment in your future. Why just "throw them to the wolves?" No matter where you put your child, their education is a good as you are willing to make it.
