I will be having a lunch with someone that I know she is married. I am just wondering whether it is polite or not to ask how many children she has in our conversation.
She is around 50's I am 30's. She is my co-worker that I have just known

Not at all, don't be skittish about it, just ask her point blank: so how many kids do you have joan?

Yes it is ok to ask as long as it is done with taste, for example, how is your family, do you have any kids? Or another way to find out how many kids she has is to ask her if she has any grandchildren.

it's not impolite to ask. you are just conversation. and she will know you are interested in her as a co-worker.
