Per California law I am a few days out from bringing home my new Springfield XD .40. This is the first handgun that I have owned, so I am still learning. I do not seem to be able to find much information on ammunition. I am trying to learn about the different types of ammo that are available. I want to learn about velocity, grain, etc. Does any one have a good web sites they can recommend to me? From what I understand the type of ammo that you use is VERY important for home defense, at least for the legality of it if I have to use it. Glazier safety slugs have been recommended to me, but then again so have Federal safety slugs. The main purpose for this fire arm is home defense with some recreational shooting on the side. I have no idea!!! Please help!!!

I thought this might help you in your quest for knowledge.
Each link has a wealth of info that I’m sure you will find useful but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
For each day is a new learning experience and the sport of shooting is for ever evolving and at times seems insurmountable, but it is not.
Take it one day at a time and soon you will be up and running.
Just wait soon you will start thanking about reloading to save you money, and it does.
Then comes casting your own bullets to save even more money, and also does.
I have traveled this path for 4 decades plus and am still learning, and saving money.
I can confess in all honesty I do not regret a day of the time invested in this sport.
This is something that every parent should hand down to their children, for I did and enjoyed every day of it, and so did my children and so will their children.
Welcome to a sport that is not just a challenge but rewarding also.

Some people can post additional info here to help you with ammo. I have a Glock .40 S&W. It is a great gun and great round. I have heard good things about the XD. On my Glock you can buy an aftermarket .357 Sig (not magnum) barrel and shoot .357 sig too. All you do is drop in the new barrel.

Someone told me this could be done with XD too. I suggest you check it out. It would be a nice way to shoot additional types of ammo out of the same gun. Inquire with a local gun shop or online about whether this is possible. I would order the barrel online as this is probably cheaper.

in maximum cases, pulling a gun on a intruder is sufficient to scare them off with out ever firing a shot. yet whilst it comes all the way down to having to pull the set off the form of ammo won't count number.

itch,

I recently posted a question concerning which defensive ammunition folks here prefer.

In one of the posted answers, a gentleman by the name of DJ offered a link to a page which explains a LOT about defensive ammunition...I certainly learned a lot, and I recommend a cursory read:

If you purchased from a reputable gun shop, the owner and personnel would be your best source of information.
Availability:
There are several sites where you can purchase, as well as obtain some info on different loads; three of the best are listed below, and all are great places to shop & buy acessories, such as holsters, as well.
