The other answers are great suggestions, but I would add one more. Ask the bride what she expects out of you. Generally the maid of honor signs the wedding certificate acting as a witness to the marriage (legally), she plans and/or hosts a bridal shower (can coordinate with the other bridesmaids on this), she's responsible for purchasing her own attire and providing her own travel arrangements to the wedding. But if you and the bride can have a sit down, and simply map out everything she's expecting you to do, then there won't be any misunderstandings later. She may want you to go and help pick out her wedding dress, she may not. She may really want your help planning, she may not. You won't know unless you ask. Good luck, and congrats!

your duties are to help with nerves before wedding also helping the bride stay organized my maid of honor was in charge of those things and small decisions that i didnt have time to make and we have been friends since we were kids so i trusted her with that i am now going to be the matron of honor at a friends wedding in december and my duties are to take the junior bridesmaids to their fittings when i go for mine i also have to research things for her like where to get the best prices on things as a maid of honor basically you are there to assist her in any way that she needs you pertaining to the wedding and in the realm of reason

move the dress skirts for pictures, hold bouquet during ceremony, keep bride from getting nervous before wedding. Basically, you are there to make sure it is the best day of her life. Any problems, you intercept. If the cake is going to be late, they call you and you deal with it. That sort of thing.
