"The style for research papers emphasizes the unambiguous, easily understood presentation of information and ideas, rather than the expressive use of evocative, complex, and richly ambiguous imagery and symbolism. In other words, research papers require an expository, not a literary, style. ... A term paper is not a 'report' of the kind often assigned in high schools, which meekly repeat information found in one or two sources. Nor is a library research paper similar to a lab report, or a report on the results of an experiment. It is never merely the presentation of a set of data [pieces of information that can be used in analysis]. Writing a term paper requires a good deal more intellectual involvement and commitment than writing a report does." Here's a good link for that.

Very briefly, a research paper looks at manly information and sources. A report is a conclusion or answer to a question or thesis which relates or refers to information.
An example for a research paper sentence: According to Dr. Burnston's test this species of spider can kill a person with one bite.
An example for a report sentence: After referencing to other work this report can conclude that Dr. Burnston test results are false.
