Not only CAN you get water on it, you should. You need to wash it so no better place than in the shower. Just don't let a direct spray hit it and not too hot!

You will get these instructions from your tattoo artist. Be sure to ask for it in writing as you can easily forget things after you leave the studio. Most clients are all high from the Adrenalin rush of being tattooed they forget the instructions.

Use what your tattoo artist will tell you to use for after care - no sense worrying about all that before you even have an appointment, but many studios post their aftercare instructions on their website in case clients forget, etc. You might want to check there, too.

Getting a healing tattoo wet is OK, you just don't want to soak it - this makes the scab go all mushy, which doesn't help it to heal. Getting it briefly wet in the course of washing it (and the rest of yourself!) is not a problem.

Generally I'd say, take baths and not showers - and in this case try to keep your foot clear of the spray as far as possible, and maybe make them quite quick showers. (Actually, though, with it being your foot, it might be easier to take a bath with your foot sticking out...?) Then gently pat your foot dry as soon as you get out. This way it should be fine - and you won't have to go around for two weeks not showering!

Hope this helps!

You can get water on it; you just can't soak it. Locating it where you mention might make it a bit of a challenge to keep the tattoo from getting soaked. Maybe you can keep your foot up along the ledge of the shower?

My shower is such that there is a slope to the drain. I'd just keep that foot upslope. You might also want to make it a quick shower, just in case. If your shower is as dirty as mine can get, now might also be a good time to scrub it down (hint to self...).

The trickier part will be getting around; ie, walking. You'll need to keep the area so it can breathe & heal well.

You can get water on it, just be sure to wash yourself with a completely natural soap, like Ivory. I recommend you use A+D Original Diaper Rash Ointment on it until it heals. I got my first tattoo in early January on my 18th birthday and that's what I used. Your tattoo artist might recommend something else but A+D works very well. He/she will tell you everything you need to know about caring for it. You're supposed to wash it two times a day with a fragrance free soap and put the ointment on it after every time you wash it and don't let it dry out. It will hurt when you wash it for the first few days but it won't hurt the tattoo. Use your hands, not a sponge or cloth. And never get your tattoo exposed to ANY sun while it's healing. That's very bad for tattoos. And even when it's healed always put sunblock on it if you don't want it to fade. Don't soak it in any water, like a bathtub or swimming pool, and don't scratch it. Keep clothing off it as much as you can, except of course when you expose sun to it while it's healing.

you don't have to not get water on it. you just shouldn't let it soak in water and you shouldn't let the shower water beat down on it. just put your foot out of the direct flow of water. i have had both of my feet tattooed and have been able to find a way to shower without messing them up!

I had one on my ankle. Take a bath/shower like normal. After you bathe, take clean water and rinse it off and then put on the antiseptic afterwards.

***To keep my tattoo moist and not dry, I used CARMEX.
Sounds weird, but I used it on all three tattoos and it really did help it.

Pretty much the same as a foot tattoo, be aware of irritation, i had a 5 month old and was constantly picking him up and rubbing my wrist. It got very irritated, and scabbed quite a bit, and has splotchy color now.

I have a tattoo on my inner ankle, and What I did is wrap the entire area, from ankle to lower calf in seran wrap. A -tight- fit. Then Wrapped tape around the seran wrap. It worked out for me, without getting my bandages wet.

As far as keeping it from getting infected, I would go to like.. Walmart of something like that, and get extra gauze bandages.. On mine, I used cocoa butter. It's a complete dream. It works for everything. I changed my bandages every two days.. every day if I had spilled something on my pant leg or shoe.

I have tatts in odd places that made showering hard until I discovered medical patches. Go to a pharmacy and make sure you get the waterproof ones. They're just like what they use in hospitals to cover wounds. They're waterproof but they still allow the wound to breathe.

it is ok to take a shower after getting a tat. Limit your shower to 10 minutes and under.

Use bacitacin or a triple anti biotic approved by yoru artist for 3-5 days.

use cetaphil or any moisterizer after that. must not have colors or perfumes in it.

always wash your new tat starting 2 hours after you get it (take bandage off in 2 hours after you get your tat) wash your hands first then wash with antibacterial soap.
