Cats will urinate in strange places when they suffer from urinary track infection... Mine got it one time and kept going in my sink but then I finally noticed he was peeing blood and took him to the VET ASAP... they will also cry as they urinate... so open an ear in that direction... there is cat food to help with that infection too.

Good Luck Hon

You need to give us a little more information. You said 'new cat' but does that mean she's a kitten or an adult cat you just adopted? Is it a kitten? Then where did you get her from? Reputable breeders won't let a kitten go to your home without litterbox training. If you got her from a good breeder, lack of knowledge isn't the problem. Otherwise, she might not know how to use a litterbox. You'll have to train her. If you see her doing her business outside of the box, pick her up and carry her to it. Do NOT shout/startle her or spray her. That'll just scare her and make it harder for you to teach her.

If she's a fully grown has never used the litterbox, try moving it to a different location. It should be private, with more than one exit, if possible, little noise, and away from her food. Cats can be quite picky. If she doesn't feel safe, she won't use the litterbox. If it's in a place where there can be loud noises (laundry room/bathroom/near some old pipes) she'll come to associate those noises and the fear they cause with the litterbox and she will find someplace safe. Make sure it isn't cheap litter. Cheap litter contains rocks and cats don't like the way that feels under their paws. And you can't really blame them. Who wants to sits on rocks while using the toilet?

Try these things and see if they help. If this is a sudden change, then you should call the vet. If cats are using the litterbox and then all of a sudden stop, it's often a urinary tract infection. It causes them pain when they use the litterbox, and they come to think the litterbox is causing the pain so they go elsewhere. Usually to the most expensive thing in the house.

You said "new cat." Has she been litter-trained? If so, then,
1. Show her where the litter box is. Make scratching and digging motions with it to emphasize the point. You can even guide her paws in scratching at the litter box so she makes no mistake about what it is.

2. Is the litter box situated in a place that is pivate enough for the cat to do her business. Cats will refuse to use the litter box if it is situated in a place they do not like (such as the hallway or kitched).

3. Perhaps the cat is rejecting the litter box becuase she does not like the type of litter in it? Use ordinary clay granules litter for a start and see if the cat will use the box then.

If the cat still refuses to use the litter box, have her checked by the vet for UTI (urinary track infection).

Your Cat may have a Urine tract infection. If you got the cat from a shelter or a pound there is a chance that your cat was a outside cat. Sometimes they will mark there territory. If the cat had been born a indoor cat They would have seen mummy cat use the litter box. There is also a chance that having moved the cat from one place to another will have upset the cat. This happened with one of mine. He started spraying things we took him to the vet and he was placed on Amatriptalin until he was more steady. Another thing It could be. I don't know if you have other cats but this cat may be trying to establish it's place among them by peeing on the furniture. Hope this helps.

First get her to a vet for a check up , she may have a urinary tract infection that would require antibiotics . Then have several CLEAN litter boxes around your house in quiet areas , with several different types of litter . Give her privacy . You may want to confine her to just one room , like the laundry room for awhile until she get use to the new surroundings .Cats will not usually go when someone is around . They will not use a dirty litter box , she does not want to get her feet dirty . The urine soaks into your couch or bed so it does not get onto her feet .After awhile you can get down to one or two litter boxes depending on how large you home is . You also want to buy a cat food with a low ash content .

Depends on the age of the cat. If she's still a kitten put her in a box with litter on 1 side. They learn fast. If that does not work next time you catch the cat doing that hold her by the scruff of the neck till she calms down then put her in the litter box. If that does not work try rubbing her nose in it then grab by the scruff of the neck and give a little shake. Not too hard though then put her in the litter box.

TAKE HER TO THE VET!!!
There is a good chance she may have a bladder infection or even bladder stones. If that isn't the problem, then a substrate preference (soft stuff) or a behavior problem may be to blame. Any way you look at it, you need to rule out the physical problems before you can try to fix a behavioral one. The vet is the best place to go for advice on this one -- we see it every day!

Because she isnt trained, get her a kitty litter box and put her there after meals, after naps, first thing in the morning, last thing in the night, and after energetic play. And if she still decides to do it on ur bed or couch rub her nose in it and put her in her litter box ,but if u catch her in the act, spray abit of water on her.
