I'm kinda confused about your question. Are you asking what can you *do* in a lobby?
Most lobbies are in hotel, apartment, or other large buildings. There is often a front desk where receptionists answer phones and greet people. In a hotel, the front desk is in the lobby.
Some upper end hotels and apartment buildings have a conceirge in the lobby who can help arrange anything from transportation, to sporting or theater tickets, to resturant reservations, to sending out dry cleaning, to accepting packages, and so on.
Most lobbies feature restrooms, pay phones, the elevators, and sitting areas. Sometimes the lobby is also an atrium with plants and trees. Some lobbies, in hotels and in large apartment buildings, will have a resturant or coffee shop. In smaller hotels, the lobby is usually where the contiental breakfast is held.
For the most part a lobby is a meeting place or a place you can wait to meet other members of your party or for a taxi or bus.

Architectural answer: a space that can accommodate a person for every 5 square feet standing room (15 square feet where chairs and tables are provided) per the International Building Code. Lobbies are circulation spaces generally, but are commonly used for a surge or gathering space when adjacent to assembly spaces such as auditoriums and gymnasiums. In hotels these are entry statements and the main hub of activity.
When multi-story these are considered to be an atrium and reqiure special fire separation from the rest of the building in that the tall space makes it easy for fire to rapidly travel to upper levels. Hyatt Hotels have fantastic lobbies, the most interesting one that comes to mind is the one in San Francisco by John Portman

Hmmm. Guests check in, check out, check their messages, cash checks, get replacement room keys, arrange tours, pester the concierge, drop off mail, rent a car, etc.
Better hotels will have live music, serve free drinks (like iced guava juice), have cultural/historical displays, etc.
Why do you ask?
