Fasting is a form of spiritual discipline used by many religions. It's a disciplined diet, not starvation. Basically, by eliminating a food, or foods for a period of time, your body acts as an alarm clock. Whenever you think about that food, you remember why you gave it up and your thoughts will turn to God.

The reference about annointing your head with oil and wash your face is talking about keeping your devotions private. At the time, many people made a big show about praying and fasting - as if to brag to each other about how devoted he or she was. Jesus wanted us to be humble, not make a show of our devotions and prayers. Since oiling your head and washing your face was normal hygene at the time, in modern times, it would mean to continue your life as if it everything was normal - don't make an outward show of your devotion.

I recommend fasting when you are wanting to reflect on God's word or if you're wrestling with a difficult problem.

When I was a believer I did fast on the Day of Atonement. If one is going to fast for religious reasons then they should be doing it not to impress others. So one should not act in a way that others would even know that they are fasting. This would amount to doing it just "for show"
From experience I believe that fasting works in the same general way that meditation does. When you take your mind off of the physical you start to think on a higher plane

Oh yes, I had known the Lord for several years before he led me to start fasting, it is wonderful, I have had breakthroughs in prayers I had been praying for quite a while.

It weakens the flesh so that the Spirit man is stronger therefore you hear the lord speaking to you much more clearly.

There are several types of fasts to start with, try it you will be very thankful you did.

You can start slow maybe one meal a day and then later maybe one day a week or how ever the Lord leads.

there are 3 day fast and 21 day partial fast, look them up in the Bible.

God bless

KJV (1611) 6:17 anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
WEY 6:17 Pour perfume on you head.
PHI 6:17 brush you hair.

Pick the one you want to make the point you want. The above are all from "valid" Christian, New Testament Bibles.

In Matthew 6:16-18 Jesus talks about fasting. The first end in fasting is the denying of self, the bringing of our body and its lusts in subjection unto the will and Word of God, the second end of fasting is to stir up our devotions and to confirm our minds in the duties of hearing and prayer, the third end in fasting is to bear witness unto the humiliation and contrition of our hearts, for the denying ourselves of nature’s comforts suitably expresses the inward sorrow and grief we feel over our sins, the fourth end of fasting is to admonish us of our guilt and uncleanness, to put us in mind of our utter unworthiness of even the common mercies of Providence, that we deserve not food nor drink.

What do you mean do I believe in it?

Do I believe that we should fast?

Absolutely!

I think its one of the unfortunate loss practices of ancient Christianity.

well it is basicly saying to not tell others you are fasting for their verbal praise or assaults etc...it is a sacred thing between you and god. and to seek others approval is wrong. as far as it saying annoint your head etc...it is talking about their customs at that time . but you arent supposed to tell others...

Fasting is self denial. Denial of food. It is a way of offering self denial, self abstinence, for something we like out of respect and thanks to God for all He has done for us. He gave His very life for us...we're giving up something we like as a show of thanks to Him. It shows that since He gave so much for us, can't we give up something for Him? This is to be done in private so others won't be tempted to feel "look at what a good person he/she is, forfeiting food as a show of love to God." It's not done to bring praise and honor to self but to show honor, thanks and respect to God. Anointing with oil: Oil was expensive and when someone put oil on him/her self, it showed gladness, celebration, a willingness to spend some money to show and bring glory to self Kind of like showing "hey, something good happened to me and I'm showing off to celebrate it.". This too, was to be done in private, not bring glory and praise to ones self but to God. We're happy and thankful to God and were willing to show it. Show it not to honor self but to honor, give thanks, to God and we're doing it so just God and I know about it.
