The music file must be in a .mp3 or .wav format (Audacity does not support most other formats, including iTunes, Quicktime, Real, or .wma - which is the default Windows Media Player music file format), and the file also must not be protected. The easiest way to work around both these problems is to:

1. Burn your music files to an audio CD
2. Download Windows Media Player 11 if you don't already have it.
3. Change the settings in Windows Media Player to rip music in mp3 format
4. Rip the music off of the audio CD on to your hard drive.
5. Look at the rip settings again to determine where your files were ripped to.
6. Open Audacity, go to "Project" and click on "Import Audio" and select the file(s) from the location that your music was ripped to.

There are also several programs that will convert from wma to mp3, but most cost money and will not work with protected files. I have used the method of burning my downloaded music to a CD, then re-ripping it many times so that I could apply fades when I needed a shorter version of a song (for a Powerpoint slide-show etc).

Hope this helps

Try "Import Raw Data". Seems to overlook a lot of problems with formats and such.
